Backed into a curb. Dented both of my mufflers. Here is a pic of the left one which is a bit worse than the right.

What are my options? Is this repairable? Will I need to get replacements mufflers from Tony and have them welded on?

Huckleberry 05-19-2012 06:27 PM

doesn't look all that bad.

You should ask Tony. Post this in the Fast Intentions thread, see if someone can help.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that muffler is toast! If the other side is even close to that than it will need to be replaced as well.

Now from a cost standpoint it is not cost effective to just replace the mufflers. Here is your best two options.

1) Send the rear section to us and I will see if i can just cut the 2 mufflers out and weld new ones in.

2) Purchase a new rear section from us. Option 1 will be slightly less money but this way you will not have any downtime.

Give me a call on Monday and we can go from there.

Thanks, Tony

I think the best option is to stop looking at it. I bet it is functionally fine...

Yeah it works just fine but it looks like **** lol

frost 05-19-2012 09:59 PM

Can you even see it without crawling on the ground? Does it sound any different?

Yeah it's clearly visible from behind but I don't think the sound changed at all

RUFFSTUFF 05-19-2012 10:21 PM

Well then....

Stop.
Looking.
At it.
And drive.

G37Sam 05-20-2012 07:20 AM

LOL I was expecting to see the muffler shattered in pieces. This is nothing man

370Z Purist 05-20-2012 07:45 AM

As long as it is structurally sound and does not leak or cause flow issues, this is only a cosmetic thing... which means you can run it without any problems.

If the looks really bother you, then I guess you just need to lighten your wallet once again.

DIGItonium 05-20-2012 10:50 AM

The corner edge of the mufflers both of mine are pretty bad as well (just 1" section). Ever felt a 4" drop in the parking lot? Yea, that ruined my night.

red6spd 05-20-2012 11:08 AM

All these guys saying leve it must all have flawless cars LOL. There are several things on my car that only I can notice but drive me insane so I can relate to the OP. Call Tony he will help you out big time.

PS. What you did is my biggest fear with this exhaust LOL. I must get out 10 times to check how close to the curb I am before I turn the car off.

If we all had flawless cars we would tell him to get it fixed immediately. Instead I'll say its just some cosmetic damage and pay better attention when driving or get a backup camera. The investment to repair/replace is not cost effective to me unless there is a loss of functionality. But its not my money and its not my problem, so good luck to the OP, and hope everything works out for the best. :tiphat:

Huan'z 05-21-2012 12:48 AM

I can relate to this! Because this is one of my personality too! Too bad for me! Lol!:icon18:

Huan'z 05-21-2012 12:56 AM

Call tony and ask for advice man! Fix it as soon as possible so u back on your happy and normal life. I rather not to knowing it or see it. But if yes. No matter what I will fix it as soon as possible. That's one of my personality. Pain in the *** huh? Lol! Just call tony and fix it buddy! Good luck to u and more careful next time man!:)

i got a much much smaller ding on one of my mufflers which cannot even be seen without crawling under the car, it still drives me crazy but the cost of replacement is not worth it in my case.
If i were you i would replace them both, but thats just me

MacLean 05-21-2012 02:01 AM

Sorry this happened to you & I know it sucks. Yeah the marks are there & since the sound hasn't changed & no leaks, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. How many people are going to look at the bottom of the exhaust on your car, or really notice it? Far from few will actually see it, but they will notice it if you point it out someone. FYI.......going forward just remember to be extra carefully backing up.

Yeah u got a point there buddy! I agree! But for me and others. (maybe just only me. Lol!:)) its hard to live with it buddy. Specially if u know u got a messed right there and specially if u taking a good cares of it. Like something bugging in your mind over and over again. I don't know how to explain it. But it's hard to live with it buddy!:)

Have you thought about spraying it with hi-temp black paint? It wouldn't be as noticeable and create more of a stock look as well as save you a lot of $$$.

tjlazer 05-21-2012 04:12 PM

or you could sand the damaged bottoms off and have a plate welded on. Would also yield more clearance. :)

vividracing 05-21-2012 04:37 PM

I was expecting to see something that looked it had been through a war...

I wouldn't sweat it at all. Sure, it's affecting flow to some degree but not enough to matter. Maybe a tenth of 1 horsepower you're losing lol.

Staples 05-22-2012 01:24 AM

I ended up having the same issue. Somehow a rock managed to get flung up by my tire and ended up hitting the muffler (I heard it when it happened). There was cosmetic damage, but nothing that changed the tone or restricted performance. The muffler was dented, as long as the muffler isn't caved in to the point it's pinching the 2.5" piping you should be fine. Eye sore over anything else.

MaDMaXX 05-22-2012 02:57 PM

That sucks, whilst it's barely any damage, it's plenty to see and really annoying for the OP because he paid a pretty penny for that system. I'd want it to stay looking good if i'd done that.

However, it's probably a fair amount of cash to have those fixed, so it's how much can you live with or afford to spend again.

Definitely look into a little driving finesse though, these cars are *short*, it's quite the skill the back into a curb like this!

Possibly related, something i noticed since moving here, why do so many American drivers, park with the front or rear overhang of the car, hanging over the curb?! It's bizarre, the parking spaces are huge here!

MattP725 05-23-2012 08:22 AM

I have a muffler where the top of the can is damaged (from transport)... the only way it is visibile is on a lift... still bothers me to this day. I also have a gash under a side skirt... again only visible on a lift. Bothers me.

Hard to explain but sometimes just knowing something is there is enough to drive you crazy.

Huan'z 05-23-2012 12:13 PM

agreed....my wife backed over a curb and scraped the paint off the right rear mud flap 2 weeks after i got the car.....:shakes head: can't see it unless its on a lift either or if you're lookin for it.

Lol ya I hear you man. I wasn't actually backing into a spot though... I was backing out so I could straighten up...but the thing is , the genious that designed the curb had one section extending out several feet further than the rest. I didn't see this in my mirror and I was looking at the other section of the curb which was farther away.... so yeah I was pretty ******* pissed off

Thnxs....... No I completely agree & I am an OCD SOB. On another note at least the exhaust isn't titanium. If so one would be in serious trouble. There are really three things that can be done here. First, leave as is & deal with it. Second, is try to fix or cover it up. Third, is get another one & it is also the most expensive option. In the end it just boils down to how much & how bad does it really bother you? Once again babbagandu sorry this has happened to you.

370Z Purist 05-24-2012 06:11 PM

a car cornered me in a parking lot and wouldn't budge. I ended up scraping my right rear mud flap. can't see it unless you're under the car, and it's on the inside, so not even attentive passersby can see it unless they specifically look for it. got mild curb rash too. drives me insane, but I got used to it. even all the chips on the front bumper and the big chip on my rear bumper drive me crazy. it's going to happen, though.
