How do I get the classic 350z sound with the 370z?

Sorry, but the 370z stock exhaust sucks! I had a 2006 350z and the sound of the stock exhaust was like a good rub and tug! ;) Now I have a 2010 370z, and I feel like it's lacking in the exhaust note department!

Anyhow, I've checked out the posted exhaust clips on the forum and haven't really heard one that sounds like the stock 350z exhaust. They are either too loud, too raspy, or just plain suck. Has anyone been able to capture this sound? If so, what setup did you use? Will the 370z Nismo exhaust give me this unique sound?

Thanks for the advice.

m4a1mustang 09-29-2011 05:42 PM

Unfortunately you really can't. The 3.7L has a much different sound than the 3.5.

NYBladeZ 09-29-2011 05:46 PM

stock exhaust is extremely restrictive as are the stock cats that's part of why it sounds like crap.

m4a1mustang 09-29-2011 05:47 PM

True, but the engine in general has a more meaty tone compared to the 3.5's hollow wail.

Edit: just realized you said "part of"

azn370z 09-29-2011 05:47 PM

I had an 06 too so I know what you mean. If you want a subtle cbe, the berks is one, not loud, no drone, no rasp.

Just the Berk HFC or the whole exhaust system?

m4a1mustang 09-29-2011 06:01 PM

Berk CBE. Sounds great.

Do you like the G37 coupe exhaust sound?

JC 370z 09-29-2011 07:17 PM

I think it has to do with the exhaust configuration. The 350s single pipe system vs the 370's dual pipe system. One exhaust i know for the 370 that has a single pipe system is 5zigen. I think this might be the sound you're looking for.

If you want sound and some HP get the cbe. Hfc can break apart and clog your cbe. The 350z had this problem, so does the 370z.

JC 370z 09-29-2011 07:56 PM

yea the mid pipe portion, i mean

Kingbaby 09-29-2011 08:12 PM

JZ 370Z's second clip is it

Yes the cats can fail and clog up your expensive exhaust, seen it happen to the 350z and 370z.

Zrider79 09-29-2011 10:03 PM

Good question op, Well i would say the nismo z still sounds great. I wonder if the s tune nismo system would bring back that sound. Someone that has heard the s-tune should chime in.

Yes it is but that's not the reason why it sounds different.

Yeah. This happens rarely, if at all. Sorry.

m4a1mustang 09-30-2011 11:20 AM

It can happen with any car. I think it's more common on cars that are not tuned well. Too much unburned fuel collecting in the catalyst can lead to deterioration and eventually it will blow out.

It also happens to some OEM cats. One of the catalysts blew out on my girlfriend's CLK 500 when she hit 70k miles. Covered under warranty (OEM emissions system is covered to 80k per federal law).

Yes the G37 sounds almost identical. I saw your post where you put on a
g37 muffler, did you get the right sound?

Point is, any name brand cats are no more risky than factory, and a fail of a tune is the main reason, not the HFCs.

delorean 09-30-2011 04:56 PM

Wonder if the 350z exhaust could be retrofitted on the 370z? Realizing some cutting and modifications would be necessary.

I haven't changed out my non-resonated midpipe yet. I'll see if I have time this weekend to swap it out to resonated midpipes. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Awesome, post a video too. Are you going with the factory OEM g37 mid-pipe too?

cheshirecat 10-01-2011 01:03 PM

IMO, it's definitely the muffler portion that changes the sound of the 370. Once you put that G37 muffler on, the typical "VQ" sound comes in loud and clear.

For the life of me, I can't understand why Nissan made the exhaust so quiet. My wife's stock Mazdaspeed3 sounds like a monster next to a stock 370. :(

Rui Z 10-01-2011 03:05 PM

I heard it was due to the new noise ordinance in other countries. Any new car model 2009+ has to meet it. G37 came out in 2008 so it got grandfathered in. But I'm not 100% positive. So did u swap out the muffler too chesire?
