Exhaust banging on crossmember
 

I just bolted on my Megan exhaust and one of the pipes is banging on the crossmember at certain RPM's and during shifting. The Megan exhaust is a dual system and the other pipe sits up about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch above the crossmember with no problems.

I tried taking the entire exhaust off and bolting it on again but got the same problem. I read some threads where folks were having similar problems with Stillen and fixed it by lowering the crossmember a bit with washers. I guess the other option would be to someone raise the hangers up a bit.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

1) loosen all the bolts connecting the y pipe/mid pipe/muffler (But dont remove them)
2) jack up the y pipe/x pipe (as high as you can get it without breaking anything) (use a hockey puck to prevent scratching your exhaust)
3)start tightening bolts from the cats towards the muffler
4)remove the jack

make sure you tighten bolts evenly (similiar to tightneing lugs).. IE left outside, right outside, right inside, left inside

I tried unbolting everything and then tightening it back down while having another person hold it as high is it would go. As soon as I tightened the bolts it pulled the pipes back down against the crossmember. I'm a little afraid that the amount of force necessary to keep it from moving back down against the crossmember would damage the pipe.

Mine has done this since first installing.didn't used to. I now have them
heat wrap to cushion it when the pipes flex from the exhaust pressure. Had to do this on my 350 as well.

Try "rotating" the exhaust when you have it lifted up. Then tighten it down. I had the same issue on my 350. Muffler shop mounted it perfectly, then the dealer screwed it up.

I tried unbolting everything and trying it again, but no matter what one side kept hitting the crossmember. Ultimately I used a metal hose clamp to pull the pipe up a little higher with the hanger and it worked great. I read about it from another member here. The new exhaust sounds great (and isn't constantly banging on my crossmember).

Use washers to space cross member evenly on both sides. Had this prob with my ARK setup. Cross member is very thin you don't have to completely unbolt it. Very easy to fix

Be carefully of the amount of washers though. If your car is low then it could also cause rubbing in the other direction if you know what I mean.

Will this interfere with the "play" in the exhaust to prevent cracking later on down the line or is it not an issue?

I have the same problem with my topspeed exhaust, its freaking annoying !!

The crossmember really isn't a vital part. I just removed mine on my G sedan. It's really only there to prevent a rusted/broken exhaust from falling off.

I had the same issue right after installing my Top Speed catback and y-pipe. I tried jacking up the exhaust and tightening everything again, but no luck. I ended up replacing the stock rubber hanger for the midpipe with some safety wire to raise the pipe a little. It only needed about 1/2" at the most. I am, ultimately, going to modify the stock hanger bracket to raise the pin a bit, but that probably is a little overkill.
