OBX Y Pipe: Hiss on coast down???
Let me begin by saying "ARGHGHGHGHGHGHG!!!!!" :icon14:
Now, on to my query: Anyone with the OBX Y pipe notice a somewhat high pitched hiss on coast down around 2.5K? Not sure if this is an exhaust leak or just a characteristic of the pipe. Thoughts? P.S. ARGHGHGHGHGHGHG!!!!!! |
Characteristic of the VQ....
|
Sorta.
It did this (and rattled) with unreasonated TP's. Stopped doing this with resonated TP's. This JUST started following install of the Y pipe. More thoughts...? |
yes, the more you free the path of sound out of the engine, the more you will hear the hiss.
|
Depends, I had zero hiss with HFCs and the custom Injen exhaust I sold a little while ago. It had a very large resonated X pipe which is what I believe cut the hiss down. My FI exhaust definitely hisses, I plan on wrapping the X pipe section with exhaust wrap to see if that helps.
|
Hmmm.... okay. With Nismo S-tune CBE (which includes y pipe) and resonated cats it sounded PERFECT.
With the above, but Y pipe swapped out, hissing like a snake... Charactersitic of the pipe or can be repaired???? |

Zero rasp -- just a hiss on coast down and slight hiss on up shift...
Sounds isolated to one side, which makes me think exhaust leak, but this motor is notoriously noisy... If this is a characteristic of the Y pipe, it's going up for sale -- very annoying to me... |
I only get an audible hiss when decelerating. If my foot stays on the pedal I don't have any issues. I would check for leaks just to be cautious.
|
Some set-ups have minimal hissing. But the more you free up the exhaust path the more likely you are to get the hissing sound, which as has been stated many times before, is a characteristics of the VQ harmonics and is masked by the factory exhaust set-up
|
Yep, the VQ37 is a cobra.
|
just a side question, why'd you switch out the y-pipe?
|
i have a bit of hiss with ART pipes and XYZ...very little....

What is the XYZ? |

Hmm.
These repsponses are making me think it's just a characteristic of the pipe. I may be going back to the old Y pipe then. Dammit. |

I can hear it with the window up and AC on. I can hear it over the stereo unless it's cranked. So, yeah... a lot louder than I would like.
Monday we'll get it back on the lift to see if it's a leak or just a characteristic of the OBX Y pipe + S-tune CBE combo... If so, I'll repair the old Y pipe (has a small, but inaudible, leak in the flex pipe) and this will be up for sale... |
Okay, old Y pipe is back on, and problem solved.
Looks like going from the 3" outlet on the OBX pipe to the 2.5" of the rest of the CBE was causing the hiss. Weird. So... yeah, this is going up for sale shortly :p If anyone wants to jump on it, feel free to PM me :D Quote:
Screw it -- I'll cheerfully sacrifice a few whp to not hear that hiss again :icon14: |
right on
