MOTORDYNE ART Pipes - Review

Firstly, I will be as unbiased as possible, I have run many configs of exhuast , HFC's / Test pipes on my vehicle both in a tuned for and bolt on state.

4 different TP and HFC variants prior to this test
Three different Y pipes
3 different intake set ups
2 full CBE's
Various tweaks for above via EM.

Today up for test are the MD ART pipes.

Mods at time of install.
Y pipe, K&N drop ins, stock ECU so purely a bolt on comparo.
I was going to wait till after xmas to do this but when I have car stuff waiting for install I gots to jump on it:tup:

I got the pics and idle video today, impressions below... I will get fly by / third party video during xmas break and update this thread accordingly, also will be going back to my local dyno to compare to previous runs.

Video - idle and rev up

Driving impressions

So - Nitty gritty time, car had been idle for 2 weeks, fitted these, reset ECU and went for a spin.
Sound - Simular volume to HFC's, no massive rasp as usually associated with regular TP's, VQ 1800 rpm hiss is there but it was even with my stock cats. On full throttle very nice, got a good growl down low.
TRQ - Feels improved, especially around 3K, normally in my experience with TP's I have lost a little TRQ, these actually seemed to have picked up some for sure.
HP - Def makes a lot more power, RPM band is smoother and pulls a lot harder up top as expected.

Over all from first drive, based of learning ECU is...these are a great bolt on, the usuable power is great, the TRQ is very useful mid corner etc.
Going through the gears (VDC Off, I never have it on;) means from 3K in first, plant the throttle, its fish tail till second, now instead of chirpping a little in second its a full on slide to redline, good fun for sure but shows a siginificant gain on my vehicle.

Like I stated , I will get motion video as the time over holidays permits, also will return to dyno for concrete numbers in new year.

Planning to get me an intake manifold from Tony in Jan to see how it likes it.

Hope you guys fimd this useful, any ? PM or post up.

Thanks for taking the time to make a review!

chops 12-22-2010 05:45 PM

nasty rasp :\

Kastley85891 12-22-2010 05:50 PM

^ Not caused by the pipes - that is not a nasty rasp, but the characteristic of the motor, amplified by the Y pipe, it was the same with the stock CATS in place.

Usually the rasp withe TP's in my Exp will be around 2800 rpm, that generic hiss is around 1800 rpm, when I installed the Y pipe it amplified that area for sure.

chops 12-22-2010 06:08 PM

ah, i dunno...i just know theres rasp with my HFC's and i get a sad face everytime i rev high. sounded the same when i listened to the video!

Kastley85891 12-22-2010 06:12 PM

Its an unfortunate trait for sure, seems to be louder with exhuast change, it is very different to any rasp I encountered previously, my comments are off course based of my vehicle and my experience - granted.
In the past the only way I got rid of it was to go full CBE.

daisuke149 12-22-2010 06:33 PM

wait till you ehar the driving video. shouldnt hear what you think is rasp there.

P.S awesome review. I will be getting these in the near future as well.

Kastley85891 12-22-2010 06:36 PM

Thanks
Yeah, revving in garage is the best I could do for today with Family and just getting back from trip etc (late last night from Beijing).

When out and about, I love the sound, its sweet.

chuckd05 12-22-2010 06:37 PM

vq motors have rasp regardless of what setup is on there.. if you dont want rasp keep everything stock... simple as that.

with that said it seems like the rasp is a little more than those that have hfc and less than straight test pipes.. which makes perfect sense...

RCZ 12-22-2010 07:06 PM

Raspy still, but sounds good!

dnasty370z 12-22-2010 07:11 PM

now you got me really on a mental battle i dont know if to go this route or continue with my plans for those long tubes headers????What do you guys think will work out better in the end??

Kastley85891 12-22-2010 07:16 PM

Arguments for each dude, tough mental battles we have to endure in the name of modding lol

RCZ - I think the drive byes will be very nice - they will be up when able.

awesome review! great job!

Boost_lee 12-22-2010 11:12 PM

thanks for the review, Im highly considering these in the future!

christian370z 12-23-2010 12:12 AM

I have never been a fan of going cat-less but that sounds great and should get good gains even over HFCs from what I have seen in terms of ART pipes on 350zs. In for more video!
