ARK Grip Type 2 - Review + Pics

Hi folks, I thought I'd share my thoughts and experience with respect to my new ARK Grip Type 2 exhaust. After countless hours of reading exhaust posts and listening to sound clips, I came to the conclusion that not only is the ARK system one of the most affordable on the market, it's also by far the best sounding (to me).

When I saw the flyers from ARK advertising their Black Friday sale, I pounced. I ordered direct from ARK via the phone. Painless process and I had my exhaust a week later. Never did get my promised order confirmation. I called to confirm the order and was told it would be in the box. I had the exhaust shipped to my work as I didn't want to risk it getting stolen off my front porch. When it arrived, my warehouse manager in our receiving department called to tell me I had a very large, very beat up, package. I rushed downstairs and found my package with several holes punched in it, from the inside out. The largest of which was approx. 7" x 3".

I got the box home and opened it up to find each pipe individually wrapped but completely loose in the box. There were a couple scraps of foam sheet thrown in but they were worthless at preventing the pipes from flying around in the box, punching through the box, and slamming into each other. No receipt, invoice, or any paperwork. I unwrapped and inspected each piece. The pipes were very nicely polished and the welds were superb. I know there were some concerns over weld quality on some of the ARK systems. Let me tell you, any issues with weld quality were certainly addressed on the system I got. Unfortunately, the inside of the box was not the only thing damaged in transport. Those loose pipe flying around caused some damage.

In all honesty, I was not all that concerned about the ding as it was never going to be visible, and, I soon found out I had bigger issues. I laid out all the pipes and discovered not only was I missing the gasket kit, I was also missing an entire pipe section.

http://www.the370z.com/members/detro...3-dsc-0192.jpg

I sent photos to ARK and discussed with them on the phone. 3 different people over the course of 3 different phone calls. They were all very pleasant but it got old explaining the story each time to whomever happened to answer the phone. Each time I got a name and asked for those people on subsequent calls, only to be told they were not there. It all just seemed disorganized. Anyway, they agreed to expedite the missing pipe and gasket kit to me right away so that I could keep my install appointment. True to their word, the package arrived on the East Coast, 3 days later. I shook my head in disbelief when it got dropped off at my desk, hanging 1/2 way out of a hole in the side of the box.

Took the exhaust in for the install and had a chat with the installer about the difficulties some people had with clearing the cross member. I explained the bolt tightening sequence and then left it in his capable hands. 15 minutes later the mechanic pops into the waiting room. "We have a problem" he tells me. Wonderful. Seems the gasket kit contained gaskets for the interconnections between the ARK pipe sections but not for the Cat to ARK connection. I told him to re-use the OEM ones as the car has 4k miles on it and they'll be fine to re-use. The rest of the install was uneventful and was completed in under an hour. Crossmember clearance is about 3/4 of an inch.

I fired the car up and let me tell you, the sound is heavenly. Any aggravation over dented X pipes, missing pipes, damaged boxes, just melted away. The car has a very pleasant low rumble at idle and an aggressive deep growl under acceleration. Best of all, I found that if you simply short shift and drive like you are trying to save on fuel, you can quiet it down if you need to, to the point it sounds totally stock. Great for folks who may have a disapproving wife or GF.

So I leave the shop and meet my wife for coffee. Afterwards, she follows me home. I just out, excitedly, and ask "So, how's it sound? How's it look?" She says it sounds great, but, "why is the right muffler hanging lower than the left and what's up with the orientation of the ARK name?"

http://www.the370z.com/members/detro...ure25612-a.jpg

I squatted down to see what she was talking about and sure enough, she was right. The leading edge of the right can hangs a solid 1/2" lower than the left can. Also, the "ARK Grip" stampings are mis-oriented. It's just sloppy looking. I poked around thinking the installer may have goofed and everything looked in order. I consulted this forum and was shocked to find that not only was I not alone, promo pictures from ARK themselves showed the same problem.

http://www.the370z.com/members/detro...e25613-ark.jpg

Obviously it's not an install issue and it's not the sort of thing asking for a replacement would remedy as all the kits are likely built from the same jig and are going to be the same. It's just not worth the hassle to pull the exhaust off, put mine back on, and ask for a replacement. So, I guess I'll live with it. It's unfortunate though, as the system does sound absolutely incredible.

So, to sum it all up on the old 1 - 10 scale:

Sound - 10
Value - 9
Customer Service - 7
Quality - 7
Attention to detail - 4 (misaligned stampings on Cans, missing parts in box, no paperwork, one can hanging lower than the other)
Packaging - 2 (cheap boxes, loose parts, damaged parts)

All in all, am I happy? Yes. When I drive I'm thrilled. When I look at it from the back, I'm a bit annoyed. When I consider it cost me less than a grand, I accept the short comings. Hopefully this review is helpful to others who are considering buying this exhaust.:driving:

Thank you for a factual unbiased opinion:)

destinyZ 12-18-2010 10:06 PM

If I could go back i would get the HKS, just saying.

Mine looks good the only issue I have is that the driver side come out from the bumper about 1/4 maybe 1/2 inch. I had a dent in one of my resinators. ARK needs to package it better and tighter.

You are correct, it sounds great but to me its not worth it. It does have a very loud whistle like sound from 2,500-3,500 with TP/HFC.

Like I said if I could go back and redo it I would. I plan on replacing when I get state side.

Sounds like terrible customer service on their part.. I almost placed the same order with the black friday special, but I am happy I didn't. I would have sent the thing right back! Atleast you enjoy the tone, and I will agree with you it has a nice rumble :driving:

370zNismo66 12-19-2010 03:37 AM

Great review OP. I almost jumped on the same black friday deal.

GoGo370z 12-19-2010 05:44 AM

Great Review. As for the packaging, it seems subjective. It all depends on the company and driver who is handling the package.

Other than that, they did explain the clearance for the type 2 units. Lets see some pictures and videos

Good unbiased review. Pics?

Thanks, guys. I was very careful in trying to just present my single experience, only the facts, and not infer that my individual experience is in any way an indication that others may experience the same. ARK prides themselves on customer service and they were very nice and very helpful in every way when I worked with them. Any thread you read where someone has had a problem, you will see ARK quickly jump in and say "call us, we will take care of you." And they do. Bottom line, they get the job done and will take care of their customers.

However, what they seem to be missing is that they have other issues in their business model that persist and cause problems for their customers that they then have to mop up via their customer service. Part of having a great product is having your customer be able to order the part, get what they ordered, install, and be happy, all without having to contact customer service to resolve an issue. A great company with a great product will have great customer service that is rarely utilized. When your customer has to spend their time on multiple phone calls and e-mails to sort out multiple issues, it reflects poorly on the company; even when your customer support takes swift care to handle every issue.

ouch! I have mine in a box sitting at home. All the parts were there...nut i haven't unwrapped every piece individually to check if they are OK

ArirangZ 12-21-2010 11:26 AM

I got mine last week in perfect condition without any damage. All nice looking exhaust.

daisuke149 12-21-2010 11:28 AM

outta curiosity who delivered the package?

I dont ever use UPS anymore. I saw the delivery guy grab the exahust box by the strap, drag it off the truck (yes off the truck bed and let it slam onto the ground) and then drag it to the door.

Made him stand there while I opened to make sure nothing was damaged. luckily nothing was.

ArirangZ 12-21-2010 11:34 AM

Mine came with the FEDEX. well protected with the foam and bubble.

Are you guys not seeing the pics I have posted in my first post? :confused:They show up just fine on my PC. There's 5 pics: The busted box, the dented resonator, the missing pipe section, the mis-aligned cans, and the stock pic from ARK that shows their mis-aligned cans too. Am I the only one seeing these pics?

daisuke149 12-21-2010 03:55 PM

no pics

detroadster 12-21-2010 03:55 PM

OK, how about now? I just noticed the album was checked private instead of public.

Sweet. I thought you guys were all blind or something. Could not figure out why folks kept asking for pics when I could clearly see them. This thread must have sucked without the pics. Sorry guys!

How many bolts did the system come with? Just got mine and its missing 4 bolts/washers/nuts.

Vicster 03-24-2013 09:06 PM

Does it come with a materials list? I'm thinking about picking up this exhaust but want to make sure I have everything before going to get it installed.

It came with the right amount of bolts. I didn't realize the stock cat had studs.

It did not come with a materials list. And the instructions are pretty weak. Needs a simple diagram calling out each part.

The exhaust sounds amazing. I did/do have fitment issues tho. The y-pipe will is only 1-2mm away from the cross brace and rattles at certain rpms. Seems like a design flaw bc there is plenty of room on the top side. In case you're wondering, I did jack up the pipe as high as possible when I aligned the flanges and torqued the bolts. Pipes still nearly touch the cross brace.

Vicster 03-25-2013 03:22 PM

Damn, now I'm starting to seriously wonder if holding off might be better. I was hoping that with the amount of time this exhaust has been on the market that a lot of these issues would have been worked out already. I really like the Ark exhaust but fitment and the lack of rattle is very important not just for looks but since I daily my Z.

Kinda wish I had statistics on problems people have had. Sometimes all you hear about are the problems because people complain about problems and don't always praise. Maybe we should get an Ark Grip poll going... I'd be curious to see how many people have had no problems what-so-ever vs specific problems.

JollyGoodChap 03-26-2013 01:54 PM

that misalignment would bother me. Glad you like the sound though.

I'm going to come up with a solution this weekend or send it back. It rattles too much to be acceptable. Already contacted ARK and they are going to get back to me.

detroadster 03-26-2013 10:42 PM

Wow, I completely forgot about this thread. Sucks that 2.5 years later folks are still fighting fitment/alignment issues. It really is a very nice system but damn if I don't curse that misalignment of the two cans, every single day of my freakin' life.

I can tell you guys that after 2.5 years of daily use, (a year of that in road-salt plagued New England), this exhaust still looks like new. Cans polish right up to a mirror shine with a quick wash of soap and water. No signs of corrosion. No rattles. And still has the best sound of any exhaust system I've heard to date on a 370. Totally biased opinion on that exhaust note but whatever.

If ARK has fixed the can misalignment problem and now it's just a matter of a finicky install, I really don't think you can go wrong with this exhaust. Not for the price. Yes their instructions are lacking. Yes the install is tricky. But once you get it dialed in and fire it up, OMG you'll never know how you lived without it.

I have a buddy that used to do all the chassis welding for a top fuel team. I'm seriously thinking of having him cut the left can off, rotate it 15 degrees, and TIG it back on for me.:roflpuke2:

shika805 03-28-2013 01:57 AM

My exhaust isn't the best fitment either. I also did have a bit of a problem with the cross member touching the x-pipe. The quality of the exhaust is great but the fitment is not perfect.

I placed a piece of old exhaust rubber hanger between the exhaust and cross member handled that issuee well. I tweaked the piping to get as close to where I wanted with the fitment and it's better now but not perfect. Here is a pic.

I ended up taking mine to a shop and they were able to get it aligned properly. They told me they had to bend a hanger a little. They didn't seem to think it was an issue. With that fixed I'm pretty happy with it. Sounds amazing.

I videoed a comparison to stock. Sounds amazing.

JC671 04-14-2013 01:21 AM

OP,thanks for the review. I too experienced the same issues you did besides the damage..

I could not get over the right side hanging lower and it scraping everything I went here on island.

I changed mine to a FI exhaust and could not be happier:tup:

ROBERT1183 04-18-2013 02:05 PM

I got mine with no damage. fit perfectly. just don't tighten everything down til you have them in the exact location you want. sounds amazing.

Bryan212 04-18-2013 03:57 PM

I got mine installed today and they had to ream out the bolt holes on the flanges to get them to fit on the studs on the cats. It came with intructions for a 350z and for a minute I thought it was the wrong exhaust, but everything else went great. I had never heard of anyone else having that problem.

1st 04-18-2013 05:00 PM

:shakes head: This is very upsetting and straight up bull!!! Hard earned money spent to keep Ark in business for a trash exhaust is unacceptable in my book. Reading throughout this thread to just hear nobody 100% happy and satisfied with what they bought is upsetting. Ima say it how it is Ark is straight up garbage go broke.

Tribalpinoy91 04-18-2013 05:40 PM

Your story to me is completely unacceptable. Spending a thousand on a product and getting actual missing pipes and hardware? Damn i'd be ticked. But hey as long as your somewhat happy right?

derraj06 07-29-2013 05:41 PM

I am also having exhaust fitment issues. I installed it yesterday and took it by the Nissan dealer here to have it looked at. They pushed all the pipes as high as they could but it still rattles. Also have to can/tip alignment issues. Probably taking it to an exhaust shop to have the alignment fixed. The dealer recommended spacing the cross member with washers. Gonna try and get to it this week.
