afe air filter

Hello!

Any body put the afe air filter "Pro Dry S" in their Z?

How was it? any hp gain?

efuseakay 10-02-2010 11:11 AM

You won't see gains from drop-ins... But they are supposed to filter just as good/if not better than OEM. And are reusable.

Not true. I'm not familiar with the afe, but filters like the K&N do add small amounts of gain. The concept the K&N is more airflow. More airflow=more HP.

Meh. The gains are so insignificant you would never notice them.

You might want to look at the dynos posted - the K&N does pretty good.

I've seen them. That's not something anyone will notice.

If you looking for a big gain on an intake you will need a long tube like the Stillen G3. The AFE drop ins are better then the stock filters and will flow even better if you take out the stock intake tubes and replace them with smooth tubes (like Cobb MAF Tubes).

I was one of the unlucky members that purchased the Takeda Short Ram intake to find out later it did nothing but cause heat soak and making my car run rich (Intake Temps +18-20F over Ambient). A good intake should be +3-10F over ambient temps.

My modified intake with the stock box now produces the same intake temps as the Stillen G3 (+3-10F over ambient) but of course does not flow quite as well from 6000-7500rpm. But it is easy to maintenance and you can put this intake together for $180 - $190 (Cobb Tubes $125.00 + AFE Filters $60.00)!

My Intake Setup (Cut the Takeda Tubes to fit stock box + AFE Drop Ins):

Cobb doesn't make those tubes anymore. The other option comes from HPS.

I like those tubes. I need to get off my a** and pick up a TIG welder so I can start making some custom stuff. I could probably sell a kit to upgrade the stock intake system for under $200.

COBB doesn't make these tubes anymore. You can find the blue ones around in some places, but the black ones are long gone.

What the hell are you waiting for then! Diddy MEOW! :gtfo2:

GZ3 10-04-2010 02:50 PM

i bought and installed the HPS intake pipes and they are awesome, i have k&n drop ins but i want AFE dry...the intake is really well designed from the factory so all am going to do is improve on its design

hfrog355 10-04-2010 03:56 PM

I know this is a stupid question, but I am still a noob - about how often should I replace air filters? I know I should be checking them every couple thousand miles, but about when should I expect to change them out?

I'm going with afe when I need some new filters. I don't think there's enough of a power gain to justify tossing the old ones before they're spent in the name of performance. I'd love to stumble upon a set of black COBB tubes somewhere...

i would say every 5k depending on area also(weather) but visually is the best bet. i wanted the black cobbs also but they were extinct when i was looking...the HPS are awesome!

I have a set of the black cobbs for sale, check the for sale area

I'm coming up to 5000 miles and thinking about changing my air filter.

What's the difference between "Pro Dry S" and "Pro 5 R"?
Do I need 1 filter or 2?
Also in the description "Washable and reusable for multiple cleaning cycles". What is the proper method to clean?

You will need two filters, one for each air intake. The Pro 5 R is an oiled filter. Personally, I don't think its worth the trouble and most go with the dry filters.

Cleaning is easy for the dry filters. Knock out the dirt, rinse them if necessary, let them dry, then reinstall. Oiled filters are a bit or complicated. As you have to remove the oil and then re-oil them after cleaning. (They sell cleaner kits, but Simple Green works just fine.) Hence, the reason most stick with dry filters.

Thank you for taking the time to fully explain!

You need two filters for our cars. Pro 5 r is thier oiled version, skip it, get the dry S,... And ignore the comments of not being able to feel it. You will notice better breathing and throttle response right off the bat. There are plenty of dynos on this website including mine from dropin with good gain all throught the power band. Add HPS tubes to these drop in and your making very close to what a full cai is making for a 4th of the price. jordo has some very good dyno plots posted about these

Afe 31-10196 is the filter kit with both if you shop amazon. Best price

Interesting. Amazon has a drop down check to see if the above fits my car and I'm getting a warning that it does not (2015). The AFE site says it does fit and the numbers match. Just an observation for anyone else that may be looking.

GZ3 08-14-2015 11:27 AM

Yea sometimes they are late updating the database but it is the correct fit

HulaGirl 08-14-2015 11:59 AM

Thanks again for the Amazon tip. I applied some of my Amazon VISA points and was able to lower the cost even further.

~37oZ~ 08-14-2015 12:31 PM

AFE also now builds all of Greddy's intakes. Drop in (afe) and post maf tubes is the best way to go, Like it was already said, the stock box is made to flow very well. There really is no point in going with the G3 or alike since our stock system is already a great cold air intake system. AFE hands down is the best drop in available.

HulaGirl 08-19-2015 07:04 PM

My AFEs arrived today. Will drop them in tomorrow morning or over the weekend. Yay!

bhandy 08-27-2015 05:02 PM

I put the afe pro dry drop ins and immediately noticed a difference, felt it just allows it to breath better. Also the intake tone increased and I also had great results and gains when using afe in my past audi's. Ref: 2015 roadster 1 month new, less than 2500 miles. And yes I drove it a bunch!!!

Brian in Bakersfield...

Everybody still liking their AFE dry filters? I'm debating between K&N and AFE, now that the R2C is unavailable...

JARblue 05-27-2016 11:07 AM

I'm a big fan of dry filters. But I haven't seen any air flow data or dyno comparisons with the AFE filters.

I've been using the AFe drop in filters with the Z1 silicone post-maf intakes for several years with no issues. I'd recommend them without reservation.

Thanks! That's the setup I was looking at to compliment the FI exhaust system. Did you get the AFE drop ins from Z1 website or somewhere else?

I may have gotten them off Amazon, but I don't remember. Regardless, Z1 is a great vendor and has great with customer service.
