What are these pieces on the intake?

So, are these black pieces on the intake functioning as noise dampening resonators or something more complicated? If so, why do they have tubes running down near the valve covers it seems?

DarkZide 09-07-2010 03:05 PM

Looks like PCV tubing to me.

'10Anamoly 09-07-2010 03:21 PM

But why all the strange box shapes on there instead of straight tubing to the intake?

I believe it is to reduce the intake noise but I may be wrong.

....intake noise?

Waiz 09-07-2010 03:37 PM

Vacuum lines?

daisuke149 09-07-2010 03:54 PM

they are supposed to be resonators. how well or much they actually work.. well. tbh dont know

When you remove the big one on the driver's side to install the COBB tubes, the sound doesn't change at all. Perhaps Nissan was just trying to make the car heavier and bias even more weight up front...

Here is the page with the part number, but I can't get a confirmation of the official part name from it:

Yeah, the tubes coming to the intake pipes almost certainly are involved with the PCM system judging from their origin. However I wonder why all the funky shapes are involved and why only the driver side has the lower piece on it. I doubt it is to catch any buildup from the PCV because it does not have a drain hole or any service information with it either. My old cars had hard PCV pipes that went straight from the valve covers to the intakes with smooth bends and 90* angles. Interesting to note that none of the aftermarket intakes replace the molded black pieces, just provide connective material. Wonder if they know something we dont?

These are usually resonators to cancel out louder tones at a certain RPM.

Jordo! 09-08-2010 09:03 PM

If it had a EGR type function, there's be a CEL for removing it. It's almost definitely just a resonator.

EDIT: Nope, they also are crankcase vents. Whoever said that before was right and I am wrong :(
