I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on my first mod ”intakes

Hi,
I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on my first mod ”intakes “it came down to these two.

1. STILLEN Generation 3 Ultra Long Tube Intake.

I don’t like the idea of, cutting, enlarging stock parts, and having possible issues down the road with AC lines, and taking off the fascia off and on to get at the filters,
That also means adding two hours for the install at the dealers for labor to the price tag! As I’m not handy or have the tools and I don’t trust local shops to do the work, the few I talked to didn’t even know what a Stillen G3 intake was, or have ever installed one. That being said the gains are impressive and I haven’t ruled it out yet!

2. HKS Racing Suction Reloaded intake systems.

I like the fact these are drop in’s no mods to the car, makes life easier for resale or trade in and any possible warranty issues down the road ! As I can swap out the parts to a newer car and replace the original parts back to stock.
I also like the way the HKS look esthetically, they sound good as well . I do plan on installing HKS Hi-Power Exhaust on the car!
That being said, they cost more than the Stillen’s G3 , not a big deal but nowhere on the internet can I find any test results on the possible performance gains?

I ‘m new at this and would appreciate hearing from you guys that have been down this road for advice.

Thanks,

Alex

Hey Alex,

I'd suggest trying the install out yourself. When I bought my previous G35, I didn't know how to do anything on cars. It was a learning experience and I now enjoy working on my car. I saved A LOT of money by doing almost everything myself.

Yeah, I may take longer to complete installs compared to what a dealer, but the personal satisfaction and the money saving factor are worth it! Saving money on installs leaves more money for mods :)

I got the stillen intakes

they are godwin and are worth the effort.

from what I have seen taking the bumper off is not really that big deal.

and the enlargement is not that bad.

+ the AC lines only need to be moved and attached to somewhere so they don't rub the intakes. takes no effort

Injen and AEM also make Cold air intakes. You won't see any gains in HP with a short ram.Especially not one worth the $$ for them.

Any intake you purchase will come with instructions for installation. Plus you have the forum if you have any questions about the install. After all, it is only an intake.

This will give you more in depth instructions for the Stillen install.

Good luck with your decision:tup:

Buy the G3 and find a good performance shop. They will be more than capable of installing it. The extra cutting isn't really a big deal and the gains are worth it. Don't bother going to the dealer.

Thanks folks ,
I will be going for the G3 from Stillen nothing around seems to have the ideal location in the car even if it’s a PITA , plus the performance gains seem to be impressive as well!

I plan on ordering directly from Stillen and save on the free shipping.I guess once they get here I’ll decide how and who will install it.

I just like to say thanks for your comments and support,:tiphat:

I will post on the install!

Thanks,

Alex

Good choice. I did the Stillen Intake first since it seemed like it was going to be a pain in the a**. I was wrong, simple simple install. Plus the car looks sick with the bumper off and the intake installed.

Red6spd,
I was thinking along the same lines on the FI cats.
Very interested to see how that combo (G3 ,intake/FI, exhaust ) works and the gains!

Keep us posted!

Thanks
Alex

Installing high flow cats are not as bad as I was led to believe after seeing so many horror stories on this site as well as the G37 owner site. However, with the right tools it is possible as the only real hard part is getting the stock cats off in the first place.

OP: good choice, I have my Stillen G3 sitting on the kitchen counter and cannot wait to throw them on the car!

I'm going for k&n drop in filters with cobb tubes. Slightly less hp gains but for a fraction of the cost.

Now let me say, before I get flamed, that by slightly less hp gains I mean after also having CBE and HFC. It's been shown that after you already have the CBE and HFC that the stillen intakes only give about 7-8hp rather than the 15hp that you see when adding it to a stock car. The k&n drop in filters will give you 5hp and cost much less.

Not saying the stillens are bad or anything, just not the route I'm going as I really don't want to worry about removing the bumper. To the original poster, consider all your options before making your choice. Lastly, as far as first mods go I would do exhaust. Not only do you get a nice hp boost but you also get a nice upgrade in how the car sounds. Again, just the route I took.

The Stillens have an issues with riping out your AC lines! :shakes head:

Also the HKS setup is very sweet setup, it's setup to give you loads of topend over 5K RPMs and you don't have to keep taking off your front-end every-time something goes wrong with the filter or pips.

HKS does not make junk and there intakes are from I'm pretty sure tons of R&D..Also Top Secret Japan uses the design for there intakes as well.

280z/300zx,

Than at after everything is said and done what type of total gains should I expect from let’s say Stillen G3 and typical CBE without HFC like Stillen or FI , HKS?

Would I have the same total gains with the HKS suction relaod kit , and HKS CBE (no HFC) as i would with the Stillen G3 and HKS CBE (no HFC)?

Thanks,

Alex

GTLAW 08-08-2010 01:14 PM

No intake is going to give you anything over I say 4-6 WHP. Stillen runs all there test on dyno jets so they get the most gain. HKS and other highend intake don't put HP numbers down because it's going to all depend on your setup and current bolt-ons.

If you want the most HP keep the stock intakes and build around them and then dyno your car and see what you get.

Most people on here buy intakes for two reasons. Sound and looks.

:iagree:

Considering that, over the life of my car, I'll be able to hear that amazing sound tens of thousands of times, I'm very happy that I dropped the $500 on the G3's :tiphat:

Not really familiar with the HKS suction reload kit so couldn't say. In general a typical CBE and good quality intake like the G3 would get you 20-25hp at the wheels depending on the dyno. Mod's hp gains individually don't stack as you start combining. For example FI CBE is good for about 15hp. The G3 is go for about 15hp also. Combining the two doesn't equal 30hp gain. As you start adding mods they work together as a system. Again, HFC are worth 10+hp but when you couple it with a CBE they are only goo for about 6-7.

I have other reasons but thats one reason I'm just going to keep the stock air boxes and use k&n filters with cobb tubes. Cheaper and almost as effective.
