The Z is the loudest car I've ever driven
Disclaimer: No video yet
So what happens when 2 buddies have to much extra time and access to other friends who bend exhaust pipes. The results are quite loud. So this past weekend my buddy who does all the work on my car (oil cooler, carbon doors install, etc) and I decided to finally install my Long Tube Headers. First off let me say that installing the driver's side header was a pain in the ***. Furthermore the O2 sensor on that side was improperly installed from factory, we tried everything to get it off the OEM header properly but in the end the thread was useless. A quick spot weld to the header and we were good to go. After we got the headers done we had a bunch of extra piping around our mutual friend's shop. So we ran dual pipes at 2.5" from the headers to the stock muffler. We welded directly to the stock muffler and reused 2.5" flanges from the test pipes. After spending a good 6 hours of toiling in the shop on a Friday afternoon we finally fired her up. Let me say that I love loud cars, every car I've had I've removed the cats and run straight pipes the most recent being a 2004 Mustang GT with an O/R X pipe and a Magnapack exhaust, it was thunderous loud. However, it doesn't compare to the Z. We consider it the VQ "UNPLUGGED" and it is the loudest car I have ever heard outside a Nascar race. No Mustang, no old school car comes close at WOT it sounds like an f1 car. It is way to loud for probably 99.9% of the guys on here but hey we had free time why not see what we could do. Power wise, my God did she wake up however I'm badly in need of a tune as the car is running very rich (rough idle, constant backfire, horrible gas mileage). I plan on bolting back on the stock pipes for the sake of society but I can't lie a part of me thinks its the coolest thing I've ever heard. It's raw, it's probably annoying, it drones, but god damn it's a fking bomb and it sounds awesome when you get on it. Once you hit 3500 RPMs it is no longer civil, I'll probably keep it aside for dyno shows just to scare the hell out of people. Vids to follow when I get a chance and although I know that everyone here will say it's to loud, let me remind you...that was the point! All I can say is that it's louder than your greatest expectation. |
I plan on doing this within the next 2 weeks. Please post a vid when you get the time!

The Z is hella loud with certain exhaust setups.
I did run my Mustang open headers once... it was pretty damn loud. :D |

Yeah I ran my Mustang open headers once also, who would have thought that my 3.7l V6 is louder than my older 4.6l V8. |
I want videos!

I'll try to get some up tonight, or tomorrow, I've working the late shifts. Be warned, this is not an exhaust for people who are picking up rasp, bass or soft sounding exhausts. It's muthafkn straight pipes for the unadulterated die hards like myself. I'll probably keep it around for dyno shows and when I get an UPRev tune, have a map dedicated to it so I don't run so rich. In the end that was the limiting factor as to why I won't drive around with it now, running that rich turned on the SES light, leaves a strong odor of gas, and kills my mileage. I wonder had I got intakes like the G3 would it have balanced out.

Honestly, while we were there bending the pipes we didn't think it would be that loud. I guess the fact that it's 2.5" true dual straight pipes as opposed to an X, H or Y design played a role. Either way it turned out to be a fun experiment, this is what happens when gearheads unite, have too much time, and access to special equipment.

No sound clip yet?

sorry guys been backed up at work, I wrongfully expected I'd have an easy Thursday and Friday

YouTube - ‪Carbon Z straight pipe exhaust‬‎
sorry it took me so long, this is only a short rev up video while sitting in the garage. I've been very busy as have my friends so we haven't had a chance to get a driving vid, hopefully soon! I badly need a tune, it's running very rich. Any quality uprev tuners in NYC? |

holy shyt that thing is loud... wow.
|
Figure you hit the limiter at 4500-4700 when you're standing still, you should hear it at redline. As soon as I make a vid of that I'll post it.
|
damn youtube wont work in the office!! :@ hahaha will watch when i get home :D

Link doesn't work for me.
I tried running the 350Z w/o any exhaust from the cats back. Whoo! Put a grin in my face. |

I know someone said that the link didn't work...taking her to PA for the weekend, going to have some fun on the mountain roads. |
Thanks for posting that vid. That's pretty loud.
|
Also put in first and you can rev to whatever you want .
|
nice but imho GTO with hooker long tubes, offroad xpipe, corsa sport exhaust is WAY louder. 5 miles loud infact.
|
it's likely, American cars are usually what you think of first when you think of loud cars. I honestly wasn't expecting the Z to get that loud but it can be driven quietly if you try. I need a tune though.
|
All I can say is WOW! That is a bit too much for me, but it's still awesome.
|
|
Wait a sec...
This is straight pipe THROUGH THE STOCK MUFFLER? How loud is it without the muffler? Damn! |
There was a 350 that came to one of our Auto-X events with straight pipes. It sounded like thunder and was easily the loudest car there by far, and we had several Cobra replica's with side pipes!
|
Honestly, I didn't expect it to be this loud, granted it is rough, raspy, and excessive. It can be driven quietly but it's kind of fun knowing I can let it off any second. I'll probably stay with it until I figure out what kind of forced induction I'm going with. Thank God I live in the suburbs, I doubt I'd make it a block in the city.

With my exhaust off I drove my Z and hated it, felt like it was going to break. Damn loud though!!
|
I don't know about it breaking but yet man it's pretty excessive. I'll keep it on for now though, we get pretty rough winters in NY so I won't be driving it much and I don't want to buy a CBE until I figure out whether I'm going TT or S/C in the long run.
