Nitrous Oxide...

Why aren't more people using these systems? They seem like such a bargain, and I kind of like the idea that can make anywhere from 270 to 420 RWHP whenever I want. What are the drawbacks?

your engine can blow up. and your warrantee is thrown away. other than that it taste pretty good in the new monster

Diocletian 05-18-2010 12:17 PM

NAWZZZZ! Placement of the bottle would be annoying I think. Also echoing the "voids your warranty" and is highly unsafe in most applications. You will basically wear out the components of your engine MUCH faster.

I completely disagree.

1. You only use it when you need too. So it's not like you are running around town spraying everywhere.

2. There are certain things that can make it safe to run.
Bottle warmer, pressure gauge, proper tune, run it a little lean, colder plugs.

If tuned right you will be fine.

 i agree except for run it a little lean, u would rather fatten up the fuel.

I figure run a little rich so you don't burn anything up. I figure running lean would be a little more dangerous. It's been a while since I have talked about NOS. I had a Zex kit on my 03 350.

chuckd05 05-18-2010 01:13 PM

I almost want to buy a kit just to go to the track with when my buddy in his 350ish whp Evo wants to go.... He talks like his car is a ferrari, It would prob be worth it to buy the kit, install myself, go to track one day with it, beat his time, take it out and sell it...

Id prob run a 12.2 or better with a 100 shot im guessing. The extra tourque would be the best part of it.

When i went to the track the last time, A guy in his C5 was telling me how he was running 12.8-9 before his bottle, now he shoots a 150 shot and runs 11.4-11.8 Shoots right out of the hole too... He was sayign how he puts it in all his cars but only uses it at the strip... he was loving my car and was telling me to get a kit . I think about it all the time but I dont want to do that to my motor.... But he insisted a good tune and 100 shot should be fine .

What are our heads made out of ? Sorry for not knowing...

DEVIL_Z 05-18-2010 01:26 PM

zex it cuts off if anything is about to happen to the motor. my cousin use to have it on his 01 prelude and did him wonders against mustang gt.

jnaut 05-18-2010 01:41 PM

I did this set-up in my old car '06 civic si it was trapping 116mph on the 80 shot... it does do wonders to motors tq less!!

come on guys...I know that nos is kind of a Fast and Furious type of mod but come on. Sub $1k...can be turned off/on easily that can give you a burst of an extra 150hp? What are the REAL chances of damage/who has actual experience with this. I can imagine what the horror stories would be...

jnaut 05-18-2010 07:52 PM

the chances are very real of damage if the installer , doesnt know what he is doing, i have had many nitrous cars... and zero issues. except for one time i didnt care about the engine i was hitting it with about 120 shot on a 1.6 liter civic !! the motor was only rated at 127 hp so i was doubling the hp..haha it took the nitrous for so long , i ran about 20 bottle through it before it finally let a rod go.

The biggest problems with nitrous are the facts that the basic kits usually don't have EVERYTHING you will want to keep it safe. You don't have to have it operated off of a window switch, but that can save you in case of a missed shift. Nitrous and a rev limiter can be a bad situation. The second problem can be that a "wet" shot is designed to inject the nitrous and fuel together. If this is done at a single point (or two in the case of the VQ) you are trying to inject fuel through an intake manifold that was never designed for a liquid (unlike a carb engine). This can (not always of course) cause fuel puddles which can lead to some of the engine backfires, or worse that you hear about. Only other thing to consider is that just like with boost, it will become addictive, and bottle refills aren't free.
