Stillen exhaust...can I unbolt the muffler?

I had my Stillen catback exhaust installed on my 370z yesterday, and before they put the muffler and tips on, I started the car to see how it would sound without them...and it sounded amazing! I still went ahead and had the muffler put on because it would look dumb without it because of the two holes in the bumper for the tips. My question is can I unbolt the muffler from the rest of the exhaust and just let it barely hang there (I don't think it would be loose and just dangling there?), leaving everything still in place, and it sound the same as before I had the mufflers put on? In other words, would simply unbolting the mufflers from the rest of the exhaust make it sound like it did before the mufflers were put on?

Oh no, not again!

Please don't.

If you don't want to run the muffler do it the right way... go to an exhaust shop and have them fab some tail pipes with tips to bolt up to the exhaust where the muffler normalyl would. Then you can swap easily back and forth between muffler/no muffler and retain a similar look either way.

I will rate the thread with no comment.

I know it was a dumb question, I'm just not familiar with things like that. Thanks for the help.

While I'm on a role with dumb questions, will it hurt to cut the long tube Stillen intakes to make them the short ram intakes? Just curious before I get them installed because I've heard some about sucking up water from when it rains causing some damage.

Gunzero 05-13-2010 03:55 PM

Doing that to stock exhaust is fine.. but why do that when you have the Stillen exhaust?
If you don't want it give it to me! :)

No no no!

The G3s are in no danger of sucking up water... they sit pretty high off the ground. Leave them be and do not cut them. If you wanted a short ram you could have bought one in the first place (and subsequently lost power as short-rams are nothing but a waste).

Okay, this thread is a joke right? Because I'm literally laughing my head off here. Thank you, onefastz, I need a good laugh. It's been a rough couple of days. :rofl2:

I mean, the G3 intakes sucking up water? C'mon, when the height of the G3's is identical to the height of the stock air intake boxes? Well played, man. Well played.

1. i think you meant 'roll', and yes you're on quite a roll.

2. cutting the...O_O;; oh hell yes, it will hurt. you want short ram intakes? i heard top secret makes some kick *** ones...:stirthepot:

3. ...rain...g3...wait, WHAT?! where'd you hear that from?? the g3s are tucked safely away, fairly high up the front. if you had injens (like i do), you have more of a chance of getting rain. EDIT: oh, semtex noted it already, it's basically the same high as the stock airbox.

BUT: even with my injens, a little rain threat still won't get me chopping up my CAI for some franken-short tubes!

i'm with semtex on this one :rofl2:

welcome to the forums buddy.

semtex 05-13-2010 04:32 PM

onefastz, on the off chance that you're serious about being concerned about the G3 intake height, these pictures should help illustrate what I mean about their height being the same as the stock air boxes.

Haha I know guys, I'm new to the whole aftermarket products for my car. I obviously knew I would be given a hard time with it, but I was just trying to make sure because a couple of local performance places told me that the intakes would suck up amounts of water and cause damage...didn't really understand their concept of how this would be, so I figured I'd ask.
