best exhaust for an S/C?

I know this is all in theory, GTM and stillen will eventually come out and give us the real info. Thus far I've installed GTM test pipes, other than the smell I love them no CEL thus far.

A lot of exhausts out there run different kinds of plumbing, we have thus far seen x-pipes, y pipes, and true duals. Which one do you think would work best for a supercharger setup? I know it would be a 2.5in but wondering what kind of plumbing you guys would run.

True Duals all day baby, baby!

NYBladeZ 02-06-2010 06:46 PM

that means everyone who bought a system with an x pipe such as berk or a y pipe will be leaving out a few HP if they go F.I.

I'm not sure there would be much of a difference between a H,X,Y pipe design but I could very well be horribly wrong...

I figure if the difference in designs has been so minimal with NA setups then so long as pipe diameters remain 2.5, a SC shouldn't be that huge an addition to the equation and thus change the results drastically. But maybe the higher volume of gas might start to bring the mid-pipe designs into the equation more...

I guess I'd like to see the answer to this as well.. ahha :D

H or X pipe will offer the best flow for a FI setup, You dont want to be narrowing down the flow route from 2-1 Y pipe.

On the Stillen, the diameter of the single portion of the Y is greater than the diameter of each of the inserting pipes. In terms of area, a single 3" pipe has more cross-sectional area than two 2" pipes. So flow is better with the single 3" pipe. With the Stillen design, the only factor that could potentially 'hurt' your power would be turbulence going from 2 pipes to 1 pipe and then back to 2 pipes. Hard to really quantify that effect though.

anyone know who is putting out midpipes other than HKS?

Red370 02-06-2010 08:00 PM

I'm pretty sure Stillen will be building their setup with their own exhaust, standard 2.5" diameter will do. I doubt the hp difference between 2.5" setups will be noticeable. Unless its a nismo, then you might lose power:icon17:

both SCs will work with all aftermarket CBEs out so far.

NYBladeZ 02-06-2010 11:58 PM

I know they will work, the question asked was what kind of plumbing would work better.

Zsteve 02-07-2010 12:34 AM

I think all would only differ by a few hp at the most, and after paying big bucks for the FI I dont think its worth the extra money to make up a few hp when you are already getting bug numbers from the fi.

Our true dual was meant for Forced Induction.

I think you'll be splitting hairs trying to figure out which works better. On these cars X & H pipes are mostly for sound.

Back when I had my Mustang, we had to run a crossover to balance the exhaust pulses due to the firing order of the engine. X pipes tended to make a little bit more power than H pipes, but it was only just.

Wha? Nonsense!

m4a1mustang 02-07-2010 07:48 AM

Also, I have noticed you have made some anti-Y pipe comments in other threads... there really isn't anything wrong with a Y-pipe on these cars, either. As long as both pipes coming off the headers collect into a large enough single pipe at the Y, you're fine.

There are a lot of TT cars that run Y pipes into a single exit exhaust. Heck, all of the LS1 Firebirds/Camaros came from the factory with a Y pipe.
