air boxes

Has anyone tried to cover the air filter boxes with heat resistant material to reduce warm air into the intake. not a fan of taking the front bumper off:driving:

These were up for sale a while ago. You should PM the owner and ask him about them and how they performed.

Wrapped airboxes / K&N / Z1 post MAF

I wrapped my Z1 intakes. No difference in AIT during regular and highway driving. Haven't yet seen whether they help in a heat-soak situation.

I believe there isn’t any real benefit from it while you are moving ...maybe very resistant while stopped ...the stock boxes aren’t really “bad” just a eye sore IMO. But I believe the best gains are from the pipes that locate the filters in the bumper area

You could always add a methanol kit if you wants to get the temp down in the intake lol

One other side bene of intakes is that it's a billion x easier to get to the drivers side headlight adjustment screw in the event you've upgraded bulbs and need to tweak the beam height.

Wrapped airboxes / K&N / Z1 post MAF

If you want some gain without the hassle of dealing with the front bumper (funny thing is, mine is off the Z right now), do what this guy did: Z&N drop ins, wrap the boxes and get a set of post MAF tubes.

Speaking of CAI in the bumper, I just installed the Z1's on mine and I have a bit of a n00b question.

Since the filters are up behind the bumper, do they really get that much air flow? It seems the majority of the "forced" air comes in by the radiator, lower on the car.

Not a noob question at all. They get more than the stock boxes. Sway has a decent mod in his build journal that forces more air to the filters. Super cheap to do too. I'd check it out.

Also an option, if more pricey. I wanted to do Sway's mod but I have a Nismo so there's no fangs to attach the ducting to.. I'd have to buy brake cooling ducting ports or whatever. Too much $$$ for not enough return.

Z1 sells this too.

I have a set of filter boxes (with duct and resonator) that I started insulating before I sold my Z. I'm trying to clean out my garage and would love to see them disappear. Send me a big box with a pre-paid shipping label and they're yours. PM me if you want to discuss.

Seller of the aforementioned blinged out stick airboxes here. Was done purely out of having leftovers after helping a friend with the IC piping on his STI. Didn’t do a damn thing as plastic is already a decent insulator compared to aluminum, but at least it looked cool?

SPDKING 06-07-2019 11:11 AM

I hate to sound cruel but there is real benefit do doing that and you're wasting your time. Just get K&N drop ins or do nothing at all (even with drop ins, I honestly think it's a waste of time because you still won't notice any differences from stock). These cars are sort of hard to work on if you plan on doing any mods that involve ANYTHING in the engine bay and it's even harder to work on if don't have the tools or mechanical skills.

If you have the money, it's best to just get cold air intakes and have a shop do it or get the intakes and a pack of beer and work on it with one of your friends or someone from this forum who does have mechanical skill.

Other than that, don't bother because you'll still be seeing the taillights of a Z with the CAI and a tune.
