Hey everyone, I have a Tomei Ti Single Exit and having it being driven during this winter, it obviously accumulated salt and it’s just dirty :( was wondering what to use to clean/polish the exhaust with. Tomei said use detergent but which kind? Don’t wanna use just anything Incase it fades off the burnt look.. any advice? :/

Soap/detergent will not remove the discoloration. Soap is a surfactant - it works by making water "wetter". Just about any soap/detergent you have around the house will be OK. Just make sure you rinse real well.

There are some soaps that might not be the best choice as they may etch the metal if left in contact for too long, eg, lye soap. But, in the concentrations you would be using, it would take hours to do much damage.

So you're saying I can just use dish soap? :O

Looks clean enough to jump right to Meguires polish.

https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-MC20.../dp/B001G9O528

It's a durable metal, it should be fine to use something like that.

Yep. Dish soap, laundry detergent, Ivory soap, car wash soap, Mean Green, ...

Its much "saltier/dirtier" now. Theres a good amount of salt build up on it now, maybe 3 times as more than what you see in the pics. Should I just use car wash soap and wipe it down with a micro fiber and the dry then put some Meguires Polish and buff it down with a MF or?

No ****, laundry detergent?? Lol that's wild. Maybe a bucket of water and car wash soap, grab a Micro Fiber and go to town with it then dry off, I'm just afraid of "Discoloration/Fading".

I've been using this for my F.I. Exhaust tips - seems to work well.

Sweet! How would you recommend to apply? Any sort of "specific technique"?

JARblue 02-22-2019 09:39 AM

Any decent microfiber should be fine for application. The metal polishing microfiber I use has one side with shorter pile that is good for polishing and one side with longer pile that is good for final buffing.

Soap will only remove dirt and debris making it look clean; metal polish will make it shine.
I use Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish

Pretty much what JARBlue said. I use one microfiber to apply and work it in and then another for a final buffing. Not too complicated.

I use the same stuff on my FI tips.... If you can remove the exhaust, you can polish the whole thing using a buffer. Most people just polish areas they're going to see on a regular basis.

Quicksilvers 02-23-2019 04:02 PM

Meguiars NXT all metal polish always works very well.

I was planning to just put my car on a lift and clean from there instead of taking them off just using a couple of Microfibers. The dirt and salt isn't TOO bad so I can just rinse and buff.

What do you mean by "Shorter Pile and Longer Pile"? Excuse me if I'm oblivious XD

That works well on Titanium? I'm not sure if Stainless Steel and Ti make any difference on what to use to clean/polish it. Just want the best product to use, and if there is a specific type of product to use. I don't know I guess I'm way too anal when it comes to this car lol

I was telling someone in the above comments if the product theyd recommend works well on Titanium or if there is a difference for Stainless Steel and Ti and if there is a specific type of product to use :/

If you are hand polishing, there's no real difference in SS and Ti. Polishes are very fine abrasives and don't remove much surface material. Some polishes may work a little better than others but any product mentioned in this thread will do a very good job. I have no idea how deep the coloration goes but several members with high rep numbers (and that I would trust anyway) have said that they use polish without removing it.

Megiuars NXT all metal polish is safe to use on all metal surfaces stainless steel, titanium etc and will give you excellent results if you use some elbow grease.;)

Nice!! I'll be doing the same, purchasing a pressure washer this Spring hopefully, foam cannon haha. I love Meguiars' products! Would the Meguiar NXT make the burnt finish on my exhaust fade away?

Pile height is reference to the density and plushness of the fibers in the towel. The term is more commonly used in reference to carpet and rugs.

Is it better to use the shorter/longer pile pad or its just your preference?

Since you don't seem to put much stock in what others have recommended, see what the rest of The Intertubes thinks ...
