Old thread but wondering if there is a resolution to this question...Is the OEM Nismo exhaust a worthwhile upgrade for a non Nismo car? I am looking for a slightly louder exhaust than stock and more hp, but keep the stock header and cats to keep the smog people happy. My thoughts were drop ins (K & N), Nismo exhaust and a tune.

Also, I read that the Nismo muffler is heavier to quiet the exhaust more than the non Nismo muffler. Maybe a Nismo H pipe and mid pipe with non Nismo muffler is the answer? Thoughts?

No.

Just get a FI cbe.

If you want to keep the car exhaust OEM, then yes it is a worthwhile upgrade. You are going to a true dual exhaust with H pipe, and a straight through muffler design versus the standard 2 to 1 Y-pipe and more restrictive standard muffler. There should be a HP increase as I stated in a previous thread. Sound-wise, not much of an increase but you do get larger exhaust tips with Nismo branding. You can eventually change out the Nismo muffler for the AAM S-line axleback muffler which will give you a slightly louder and very refined exhaust tone with zero drone.

PS: I recently went back to this setup after having spent about a year with the ARK DTS exhaust system. In the end, I could no longer live with the drone at around 4-4.5k rpm and misaligned tips. Good news is I managed to sell it pretty quickly.

I bought mine new, so I didn't want to screw around with the warranty. I drove a new 2020 Nismo to compare the sound to mine. I could not tell the difference. I talked to Nissan and the people at Nismo.

I wound up getting the Nismo R-Tune CBE and had the dealer install it.

WOW

What a difference! I don't know if it makes any more power, but the new sound was a revelation. Get on the throttle over about 3500K and it just sings. Beautiful. It no longer sounds like an Altima. However, you will put your foot down more just to hear the sound.
