Test pipes< which brand???
Hi guys, i have a 2016 370z. I had originally bought the HKS HI PO CBE and wasnt satisfied with the sound it made so i chopped the mufflers. The car now sounds amazing. But its time i want just a little more. My questions are 1) will non resonated test pipes increase backfire and crackling noise? (i like that) 2) will non resonated test pipes cause an ungodly amount of drone? (to the point where driving 15 min anywhere gives you a headache) 3) will non resonated test pipes increase raspiness? 4) should i look into custom test pipes or a brand, if brand which one?

in my opinion all test pipes are pretty much the same... about a 18" long piece of tube, how much difference can one be from the next? I have test pipes on my 370 used in conjunction with a ARK catback with x-pipe. Sounds just fine, and imo not loud at all. I have very very little drone, and certainly not raspy by any means. These 3.7's sound unique and never heard anything like them before

Loud??? No its not... Have you ever owned a 408Ci LS1 with solid roller cam, no cats, and 3 1/2 exhaust dumped before rear axle.... THATS LOUD and SOUNDS AMAZING. These cars with no cats, and after market CBE sound "different" IMO certainly not loud.... All in my opinion of course... I certainly miss my LS1 days. |
I bought FI non-resonated test pipes for my 370Z, even on my old 350Z, and have zero complaints. Sound and quality are top-notch. Rasp? Sure, but that's to be expected with test pipes. Still, the rasp is very minimal IMO.

FWIW
I recently added test pipes, and cheap ones at that. Rasp, yes 3-4.5k. Loud, not really. Idle and startup is still quite, WOT sounds loud in a good way, no drone. Not much of cracking and pops. You will get a hiss sound and exhaust smell, i don't mind either Stillen intake Gen2, Stock Headers, Megan Racing Res. Test, Stillen CBE |

I bought a set of non resonated fast intentions test pipes. I like them and the power gain was one of the best mods. I gained 20 whp and 15 ft lbs of torque in the mid range and 7whp on the top end. Well after a while I got tired of the drone. I also have the fast intentions 18 resonated catback. It would be hard to talk on the phone or to my girlfriend on the interstate but the radio could easily drown it out. So I switched their resonated test pipes. The sound was basically the same maybe a little deeper tone. As far as the small amount of rasp it had before, it was barely noticeable, it was now gone. The drone was entirely eliminated. I can easily have conversations with people and talk on the phone while going down the interstate but the exhaust itself, from outside of the car, is the same volume. I'm very happy with my exhaust setup now and I highly recommend the fast intentions resonated test pipes. Just my .02 cents.

If you can afford it get the Motordyne Art Pipes.

UPDATE: Ended up purchasing the Z1 non-resonated test pipes. All left on my exhaust are the resonators. Car is viscously loud. I know what loud cars are and this became loud. Also very raspy but IMO rasp is a signature of VQ motors. Finally audible at the racetracks and the downshifts can scare the living nuts out of other people driving alongside me haha :P Neighbors hate the volume of the car, cops think I'm racing under quarter throttle when I hit rasp at 3k rpm, and dogs think the aliens have invaded earth.
