Purely volume wise, having stock cats or HFCs will lower volume. A couple of Zs in my area have short tails but stock or HFCs and the volume isn't terrible loud, it is loud though. I was expecting to be a little louder with test pipes because I though the cats didn't effect volume much, I was very wrong.

Why would you chop up the FI exhaust to add short tails? You haven't opened up the cats yet. Add test pipes or HFCs and then see how it sounds.

Wasn't suggesting chopping the FI, was suggesting chopping some short tails to make them fit the FI.

And that's probably what I'll do before I just grab some short tails, judging by the comments, sounds like test pipes will give me what I'm looking for.

I'd say first figure out exactly how much louder you'd like to go.

if you want some volume I'd actually go test pipes first. it adds a good bit of power due to losing the super restrictive cats. also dropping mufflers will add more sound than test pipes.

I run non-res TP and non-res CBE with CF mufflers. I thought that wasn't loud enough so I have a custom set of short tails to match and mate with FI system. the volume goes from loud to WTF when I switch out the mufflers for straight pipe sections. :bowrofl:

Thanks for the input, my Z is my DD, so I don't want it insanely "wtf" loud, but I do want a little more bark when I'm stepping on it, alrighty I'll probably go test pipes and if that isn't enough, might go "wtf" with the short tails lol. But I do like the idea of being able to just swap them out real quick for a car meet or something.

yea I DD mine in the warm months and I just put my straight pipe setup back on and I forgot how big of a difference mufflers vs no mufflers is.

its tough though because I absolutely love the sound my exhaust with the CF mufflers. just the tone it has is sexy and I was almost not going to swap back this year. then I swapped and it's night and day.

the switch is easy. it takes longer to get the car in the air than it takes to switch.

I have some videos of both if needed.
