Cat bolts

I got my hfc's buy now the battle begins. I've have been reading stories on those demon bolts as most people knows them by lol. Anybody has any advice on how to accomplish the task ?

I sprayed two cans on liquid wrench on them, let it sit for a couple days, then attacked them with a breaker bar. Actually went pretty easily

Bring it to a shop and can it a do it. Let them deal with the headaches of the install chances are you'll encounter... just watch and make sure they give you YOUR stock cats back, I live in NJ and brought it to the hood they did a great job but had to cut out a bolt, good install but they wanted to keep my cats so they gave me different cats that were not mine, I went and spoke to the owner they had a "mix up"

brancky3 02-20-2016 07:53 AM

I paid a kid on Craigslist $100 to do mine.

Whether you do the work yourself, or take it to a shop, just remember to remove the O2 sensors BEFORE tackling any of the bolts, especially with an impact wrench. Otherwise, most likely, the sensors will get damaged.

Had mine done at a shop took them an hour and was on my way

This is wrong, I hear this a lot and its a myth.

Back in the day when there was resistor type 02 sensors, they would get damaged from impact wrench's. This day and age they're a heater type 02's. They still have a resistor, but completely different style.

I own a exhaust/mech shop, we never remove the 02's, ever.

Inless there a resistor type o2.

Really? I've heard a lot of people here report failed O2 sensors after shops use an impact on them. If it's a myth I've wasted a lot of time doing things the hard way. :rofl2:

Yep, We had to prove to one of my mechanics that this was the case.

we brought in my shop truck , took out a 02, smashed it with a hammer a bunch of times, put it back in, worked perfect lol, 2 years later. still working fine.

I see a lot of shops when installing 02s they don't back whined the wiring, they install it and twist up the wiring, the pin usually pulls out of the 02, and then its fd.

Wrong bud. The impact WILL KILL the O2 sensors. Been there, done that. You've been lucky.

EVOHUNTER 02-20-2016 01:31 PM

Hahaha, yah tons of luck, we've only done about 7,000 invoices on repaired and replaced exhaust system in 1 year. Not one bad 02? Sound like luck? No, its not.

do you own an exhaust shop? Do you install/fix 20 +exhausts daily? Not trying to be rude or anything, just being realistic.

Ive got a question for you, Did both your 02's go bad when you used your impact?

EVOHUNTER 02-20-2016 01:39 PM

Im going to order a brand new 02, ill make a video.

Ill take it out of the box, Will test the resistance before, Ill smash it with a hammer 20+ times, then will test it again.

Im not trying to argue either, only stating facts.

But here, brand new 02, smashed with a hammer - res stayed the same.

had a hell of a time doing this while filming, I actually made 6 different videos but kept droping the phone etc. I hit this sensor 40+ times before the last video.

Ok so the 2 back bolts on each cat broke free easy.... the other 3 on each cat near the front on engine bay side (front of car) look harder to get to.... but I noticed these I think I can do from under the car through the wheel well. But the top bolt on each cat look very hard to get to. I don't want to go through the engine. Is there a way to do it from under the car ?

There is one bolt hiding that you can see on the top. Has anyone removed that bolt from under the car ?

1/2" gun, , couple long 1/2" extentions (24-36"), swivel joint with the socket on that, attack it through the engine bay.

If you want to tackle it from underneath, youll need to heat it up, 1/2" rachet, with a crows foot, then put a pipe on the end of the rachet to give you more torque.

Zoom370z 02-20-2016 05:20 PM

Ok so I got the passenger side bolts on cat free, now on driver side all bolts came out except on through engine bay ... it seems to have a black metal pipe which I think is the steering column. I can't get my extentions through there, that pipe won't bend either..

Try to remove the driver side intake so you have plenty of room to see where you're attaching the swivel socket.

That makes a hell of a difference.

Your half way there. :)

The hardest part of taking out the stock cats were the top bolts one on each cat on top facing the engine bay. And all bolts came off nicely but one bolt snapped and bolt but not to bad. Now for the sound.... the cold start was a little deeper then stock, once at idle it sounded like stock with a little throaty sound. Now once the car settled in it still sound a little quit for me but sounds good when I step on it, not to bad on freeway still sounds like stock just driving at freeway or driving in the city.
