Megan Racing Midpipe

1 Attachment(s)
Has anybody tried to use the Megan Racing midpipe with the OEM mufflers? If so how is fitment? Do the OEM muffler tips stick out too far, or too short? Has anybody used this midpipe and another manufactures axle back? Any feedback on sound or performance differences would be much appreciated as well.

Right now I have what's in my signature and I'm at a fork in the road. Originally I was going to go with the Tanabe Medallion exhaust but, another member has given me a heads up that they will be selling their AAM axle back (mufflered version, not short tails) soon and that would save me a good chunk of change. But then I'd still be choking the system with the OEM midpipe. So if this midpipe is a straight drop in without fitment issues with the OEM muffler then that would be awesome! Please let me know everybody's thoughts or reviews from anybody that has this midpipe.

Thanks!

Look at my signature, I already have the Motordyne XYZ pipe. I'm only looking for a midpipe + muffler combo.

Thanks though.

I was in the same boat and thought about Megan mid but I lucked out and picked up an S-tune mid pipe for less than a hundred worked out great. Now just waiting on a nismo muffler to finish off the set up.

Nice! What's the diameter on the s-tune midpipe?

I really like that the Megan Racing midpipe is 3". That will mate up perfectly to my XYZ pipe as long as somebody can confirm that there's no firmest issues when you go to mate it to the OEM muffler.

S-tune is 2.25 iirc. Mated just fine with my XYZ pipe with out issues. Just make sure both ends lined up and tightened.

Edit: Google says S-tune is 2.5"

That's what I thought it was (2.5"). Hmm, maybe I'll send out a bunch of fitment emails to multiple suppliers and see how their responses compare. I really hope it's just a drop in replacement like the s-tune midpipe. 3" vs 2.5" should make a difference for sure in sound and hopefully more HP/TQ too.

if you have FI test pipes why wouldn't you just add the rest of the FI pieces to complete the exhaust? it shows some of the best gains and has amazing sound.

I have to keep my Z relatively quiet :shakes head:. Neighbors, up tight co-workers, etc. The 18" resonated FI system would be a little too loud. I need the exhaust be as stock sounding as possible at idle and regular daily driving (a little lower rumble is fine, just nothing crazy) but I also want it to sound great at WOT when I'm not around the neighbors, up tight co-workers, etc.

That's why I'm looking to find a midpipe with larger than OEM piping diameter and resonators to work with the AAM axle back (not short tails), or just stick with my original plan and go with the Tanabe Medalion exhaust. Let me know if you can think of a different route that meets that criteria though. And before you say anything, I know; I'm asking for the moon here haha.

if you go with any FI setup with mufflers will be fine. drop the AAM short tails if you actually care what your neighbors say. that's where the volume is coming from. my exhaust is night and day with the mufflers off vs on and those are my only bit of sound silencing. i have TPs and no resonators.

me i don't care really. hence my FI straight pipe. but i did have it made to swap in and out the carbon fiber mufflers whenever i want.

The AAM axle back that I'm going for is the mufflered s-line version, NOT the short tails (link below of what Im referring to). The short tails are way too loud, believe me I ran a pair for about a month.

im weird i guess i just wouldn't want a pieced together 3 brand exhaust.

also i'm a big fan of true dual exhaust set up for better flow and power.

That does sound awesome, just too loud unfortunately. I also see your concern, but it's kinda the only route I can go without selling off my XYZ pipe and going with a full AAM midpipe + s-line axle back set up or my original plan of the Tanabe exhaust.

I really like the ability to switch between straight pipe, resonator, and HFC with the XYZ pipe as well and the Tanabe exhaust fits my volume requirements quite well. But IMO it is overpriced being that it's only a y-pipe back exhaust, so that was the reasoning to start this thread. Just seeing if anybody else had any ideas or opinions on stuff before I sink ~$1,200 into the Tanabe.

so are you planning to use your XYZ with AAM stuff? doesn't that XYZ run dual into a single 3"? how do you figure to hook up any AAM products when they are duals and 2.5"?

maybe i miss read and you want to drop the XYZ.

Yeah, the XYZ won't work with the AAM midpipe. So ill have to decide on which one I go with, not both. For the hassle of selling the XYZ and more than likely taking a hit on it I'll probably just hold out for the Tanabe. I just wanted to see if anybody had ventured into the territory I was contemplating.

technically..............i know a way you can go with AAM and keep your XYZ

i don't think it's offered yet but it does exist. AAM has a in development single exit exhaust. would probably work with your XYZ single point connection but i didn't actually all the way under a friends car to see how that part joined up. mostly checked out the rear section and the back of the mid pipe.

That would be amazing! Do you have any contacts at AAM or maybe your friend does? I would definitely be interested in getting more info on that.

in case it was still supposed to be a secret i didn't tell you :wtf2:

i haven't talked to anyone down there lately but i'm sure if you call and just say you heard/saw it at zdayz on the red Z with AAM stickers on it lol it is my friends car he was doing the testing for the prototype.

don't remember the diameter but its single exhaust with a titanium muffler. think there was a midpipe muffler/resonator as well.

Lol, no worries I won't give up the identity of the little birdy that gave me the inside scoop. I know you don't know the diameter but was it a single exhaust with a dual tip muffler, or single exhaust with a single muffler tip?

Zbrah 01-26-2016 10:26 AM

My current set up: Art pipes, XYZ Y-pipe, S-tune mid, stock muffler. The tone is low rumble when cruising and not obnoxiously loud or ricey. Has a slight bit of rasps at WOT which I think it's the crappy stock muffler so I'm switching out to a nismo muffler soon. I plan to pick up a Meistershaft mid this summer to increase the volume some more.

the muffler was single can with single tip that came out on the left side of the rear bumper. pretty much stock location of the left tip but with a slight upward angle.

let me see if i can find the video from zdayz exhaust comp. he was 2 cars ahead of me.

That sounds pretty much like what I would be going for. Any vids?

Ahh, dang it. I definitely want a dual tip muffler. Maybe the midpipe from this could still work out though. Let me know if you find that video.
