Cams and Ecutek VVEL tuning

Now that Ecutek let's us tune VVEL, which some people suggested would enable a lot more gains from cam, I wonder if there will be some more after market cam devleopment now our Zs. Anyone heard anything about anything regarding this?

Mysilverz 12-03-2015 12:03 AM

The only camshaft upgrade I know of is from Jim Wolf Technologies. The have a more aggressive exhaust camshaft.

brucelidat 12-03-2015 12:07 AM

There are the JUN ones as well. I haven't heard of the Jim Wolf ones. Is there any data or reviews/dynos on them anywhere?

DavidZ370 12-03-2015 12:18 AM

JUN is crap

brucelidat 12-03-2015 12:21 AM

JWT claims 30 trq at 3k RPMS! That's pretty impressive, looking for some dynos now.

brucelidat 12-03-2015 12:26 AM

These JWT cams must be new, they seem interesting...

Elmo370z 12-03-2015 12:50 AM

The dyno they showed looked great. I'm waiting for the 288 to come out

Elmo370z 12-03-2015 12:52 AM

Next year I'm looking to do heads cam and mani, and maybe a nismo oil pump to bump the revs to 8k. And go as far as 8-10 to find a great ecu tek master tuner

brucelidat 12-03-2015 01:12 AM

All this new stuff is getting my hopes up for some real NA gains. If the stage 2 cams and new manifold design/TB combo or whatever can give me ~35whp/trq on top of my current mods, I'd be very interested unless the price is just ridiculous.

Elaborate on "crap"?

All will depend on your tuner. I expect the price to be high. These newer car parts are crazy

FNR32 12-03-2015 02:32 PM

Looks like the price is $750, which I consider very reasonable.

Looks like someone doesn't read ^^

FNR32 12-03-2015 03:24 PM

Whoops. What'd I miss?

brucelidat 12-03-2015 03:57 PM

labor for install will probably be like 2k

Yes so if you're going to do the cam swap, mine as well save up and do the heads at the same time. Ipp will install the cam for you and port match it. $1600. putting the VVEL back together is another story in itself.

We are discussing when JWT releases the stage 2 cam.

FNR32 12-03-2015 04:07 PM

Yea I did miss that. 3kish for 10hp and 30ft lbs. hmmmmmmm

brucelidat 12-03-2015 05:11 PM

the 30 ft lbs is impressive. Hopefuly, the stage 2 will be more like 15+ hp and 30+ lb ft. I'd be in unless it made the car sound awful (to me).

Same here. My car is still bone stock, so im wondering what kind of gains I could expect to see with typical bolt on mods + headers and JWT's new cam, whenever it's released.

Prob the same JWT got or less. For NA motors to make crazy power gain you need to spin the motor. Thats where it get costly almost TT price. Billet crank, dry sump, and forged internal able to handle high revs. Then you have the VVEl which hasn't been tested in high rev situations. I have a spare block:)

Elmo370z 12-03-2015 06:55 PM

My solution before i commit to a dry is the nismo oil pump as set my limiter to 8200.

EzDz 12-03-2015 08:38 PM

Im curious who spends time at 3k rpms in a z if you are actually driving it...

brucelidat 12-03-2015 08:47 PM

When you DD it, you spend time there. I rarely have open roads unless I am going out specifically to drive.

Elmo370z 12-03-2015 10:02 PM

i rarely do unless im on the highway.

FNR32 12-03-2015 10:11 PM

I spend quite a bit of time at 3k on the highway, but I don't drive like a bat out of hell everywhere I go. Not all the time. :-P

chuckie311 12-03-2015 11:19 PM

add another 1000 on top of that if your going to Seb I already talked to him about it its about 3k for install 25 hour job

Damn, I guess it's more labor intensive than the Jun cams. A long time ago, he told me 18 hours for Jun cams.

Elmo370z 12-04-2015 09:15 AM

Vvel heads suck a phatty

coming out of corners that 30 extra tq at 3k rpms will pull you right out of there and launch you into the next straight :driving:

from what ive been told its 20-25hr install so depending on the labor rate it's up there.

brucelidat 12-04-2015 06:04 PM

So I didn't want to derail the other thread that is specifically for the cams so I'll ask this here. People mentioned getting the heads done while in there replacing the cams. That exactly are you referring to, having them ported? Is there anything else worthwhile to do while doing the cams to get more gains? If more things could be done to increase gains in conjunction with the cams, it could make the labor price more reasonable for the gains.

Elmo370z 12-05-2015 01:39 AM

If you send ipp the cam, they will port match it and install the cam for you. You also get a 3 angle valve job. I wish cosworth would step in and make a set of badass heads.

MicntaeG35 12-05-2015 11:53 AM

yea install would be a b***h. I would love to do this though if I could find a good deal on install. I do 99% of the work on my car but this is where I'd mess something up haha

lj909 12-05-2015 12:05 PM

We need a full DIY tech manual. Anybody?

1slow370 12-05-2015 12:56 PM

The fsm? Thats what i used to guide me through the first time i did cams. By the way the jun big cams (not the stage ones) make a huge improvement above 7000 rpm you just need to be ballin out of control with $10k+ in other breathing mods and and being able to spin it.

Elmo370z 12-05-2015 01:37 PM

What other mods is your old car getting done to reach 500bhp?^^
