Bypassing base exhaust Y pipe.

Would there be any reason not to bypass the base exhaust Y pipe with an H pipe?

Ok, color me curious.

I've been pondering over this trend among you guys, "Z people". Out there, when there is a V8 engine in a vehicle, usually of a domestic brand, the OEM exhaust tends to have a H-pipe (save for a few models). The aftermarket usually have X-pipe as an upgrade, or if the aftermarket company cared more, the crossover pipe is in the form of two nicely-siamesed pipes ala NASCAR which subscribes to the notion that this configuration is best at scavenging and equalizing exhaust gas flow-pressure-whatnots.

Now, the 370Z OEM configuration is in the form "double Y", perfect for merging pulses and maximizing scavenging effect. My NISMO S-Tune exhaust has this configuration while my DC Sport has very very nicely crafted, siamesed crossover pipes. From noise point of view, "true dual" and H configurations create an alternating pulse sequence between the tailpipes while the siamesed and X configurations create equal pulse sequence between the two due to blended and merged pulses from both banks.

So, what is the feature that becomes so popular with "true dual" exhausts in the world of Z cars? Is it the noise characteristics? Bragging rights? Popular belief? Please enlighten me.

Agreed.

Most domestics i have owened came with an h pipe and we upgraded to X all the time. Idk what the z worlds obsession with true dual seems to be. I noticed this come out more in my 350 days. From all my experience its always been Y<TD<H<X for hp and tq. I cant wait to add an X pipe to my set up

So the benefit would be in reworking this to an X?

Absolutely

Even when i had my 5.0, it came with an h pipe, i upgraded to an off road H, made great gains, then upgraded to off road X, made an additional 5rwhp and tq with gains ALL under the curve. The best exhausts for the Z have x pipe configurations, most notable fast intentions. Imo the best one for our car thus far

I would wait till sept when garageline stocks back up thier X/mid pipe combo... 299.99... It looks identical to the magnaflow/kooks x pipes for the domestic world... Its a beautiful piece

Whoops, been calling my X pipe a true dual. Better rephrase bwahaha.

Anyways, you might as well get rid of that whole area from the cats to the resonators. It was like 1.75-1.95 inches (diameter). A disgrace for a sports car honestly

I think the popularity of getting exhaust work done on this car is because the factory Y pipe is so small that pretty much ANY exhaust is an improvement over the small OEM Y setup.
