Avg installation price for exhaust system?

My mechanic quoted me between 3 and 400 to install a Motordyne e370 catback exhaust system. Is this the average price?

madwi 05-28-2015 07:50 PM

I paid $80 out the door. Was quoted $100 but since it was such an easy job he knocked $20 off the price.

icedog2g 05-28-2015 08:09 PM

That's too much. It's a plug and play install. Had mine done at dealership and it was $150 and I thought that was too much.

Even if they tried to milk it, It's still not an hour worth of work.

MagmaRed370z 05-28-2015 08:24 PM

$100

:iagree:
My car was in the air for maybe 20 minutes, a lot of that time was adjusting the tips to get them lined up perfectly.

Ask your mechanic if that price includes sending his wife over to make you dinner and breakfast.

Most shops charge around $60-100 per hour labor. If you're getting anything above that keep walking.

$hit do it yourself it's an easy one to do.

DEpointfive0 05-28-2015 08:42 PM

$50 in the hood, $100 max at a real shop

This. Buy a socket set, a pair of ramps and a six pack. Spend the money you were going to drop on labor on more parts.

Heck, I paid less than that to have my FI catback AND test pipes installed (and the test pipes take significantly longer to install, due to the bolts).

exactly what happened with me too... quoted $100, paid $80 out the door.
unless you're getting a happy ending 300-400 is ridiculous

JARblue 05-29-2015 08:19 AM

My mechanic charges $135 per exhaust system. But that's only because he doesn't want to fuck with them. He doesn't keep extra hardware around, so if a bolt breaks (like two of mine did the last time I was in there), it's a pain in the a$$ for him.

Zbrah 05-29-2015 02:39 PM

Sounds like he's prepared for the job!:rofl2:

midlife 06-03-2015 09:15 AM

I paid $75.00, took less then 30 minutes.

.c2 06-07-2015 07:37 PM

The motordyne one is so much more annoying than other exhausts because of the stupid clamps instead of the typical flanges..

shaun66 06-07-2015 10:39 PM

Paid a shop 90 bucks to install my Motordyne exhaust.

My FI 12" and HFC's come in in a few weeks. I called a shop to get a price for both to be installed. He quoted me $196. Maybe this isn't too bad for both? I usually do any car work myself. Just been to busy lately to do so.

Zbrah 06-13-2015 12:17 PM

Stock cats are a pita to remove (demon bolts) so 196 to install both is a freaking good deal!

I think I paid around 250 to have my test and catback installed together.

09MB370Z 06-14-2015 04:18 PM

I paid $150 for test pipe install. Didn't pay anything for my exhaust install, did that myself.

Awesome. I've read about these demon bolts, one reason I wanted someone else to do it. Wasn't going for HFC's right away, but figured I may as well if I am getting the exhaust. Thanks!

Lionheart 04-16-2016 04:47 PM

I ended up installing it myself. Took two days and a combined 4 hrs. Two days because of demon bolts necessitating a run to Harbor Freight to pick up the breaker bar and a wide assortment of sockets and adapters. Got two massive headaches from the PB Blaster.

Motordyne instructions specify in-lb torque adjustments on the clamps and ft-lbs on everything else. Did not read the in-lb so overtightened a clamp and busted that as well, need a new one for $25.

But finally got it on and sounds great.

If I did it again I would look for a lift.

barncobob 04-16-2016 05:09 PM

DIY, take the old lady out for dinner with what u save.

Stright_Drop 04-17-2016 12:37 PM

$80-$100

babyzilla 03-08-2022 09:55 AM

Jesus. I just got quoted $320 for my FI CBE. I guess exhaust installs have gone up 200% in about 6 years lol

Definitely going to try installing this in my own garage. I have all the basic tools, just need to find a buddy that is free.

dave11 03-08-2022 12:09 PM

I had an R-Tune CBE installed at the dealer for $266.44 in April 2020.

JARblue 03-08-2022 12:41 PM

Places around here charge anywhere from $100-500 to install an exhaust. Anywhere in the $150-200 range seems reasonable depending on your location.
