CEL after berks HFC install

I've been driving it daily with no issues until tonight I drove it hard for about a quarter mile no problem. Continued driving normally I get to pharmacy turn it off. Go in for about an hour come back out turn it on and CEL comes on. I'm a little shocked I bought them new with their hardware and gaskets.

I thought I was golden since I just hit over 200 miles after install. So I did the CEL reset and took a quick test drive. Got on it pretty hard to see if it would replicate. No issue.

So my real question is this. I'm prone to have problems which is why I was hesitant to get the HFCs to begin with but everyone swore by Berks so I did. It was installed professionally by a Z specialty shop. So since I did the CEL reset is there a chance I will be good or will I be looking at it popping back up again? the car is at 17XX miles. I had them installed at 1490ish

If you guys think this is going to be an on going issue I might just go back to stock cats. I would hate to see my new car with a CEL every couple hundred miles. I do see the gasket pressed out a little on the driver side a little over hang of sorts but I think that wouldn't cause any issues since it's behind the CEL.

I did my searches and everyone seems not to have an issue and those who did it was things like bad or no gaskets during the install. It still sounds great and I love it. With an intake and HFC is it possible that it's running too lean.

Don't want to run into the stealer ship and them say oh your warranty is void blah blah blah... Any input or thoughts would be appreciated. Last ques can I find out the code that was thrown without visiting the dealer?

I have FI HFC and I occasionally get bank 1/2 lean codes. Those codes are coming from the secondary O2 sensors and can be disabled through UpRev or possibly defoulers.

With any aftermarket HFC/TP you might get occasional catalyst efficiency below threshold. Just clear it and don't look back. Unless it keeps coming back so you could do as dislimn already mentioned. Just make sure it codes for downstream sensors. HFC/TP if installed properly should not get any upstream 02 sensors codes.

If you getting lean codes from a/f upstream sensors, I would deff have that checked out. Your car might be running lean from your mods which isn't good for the long run.

Thank you for the replies I'm working on getting an up rev tune right now actually. Looking to see if we need to crack the ECU or if it has been cracked. I believe it's running extremely rich which I believe is due to the car believing it's very lean I say this because I'm getting like 12 miles to the gallon right now :shakes head: I'm at 77 miles after a full fill and almost at half a tank

I was wanting to wait on the uprev because I wanted to get more of my mods on first so I don't have to re tune but looks like I'm already passed that point.

I appreciate the replies!

So I got the CEL again for those who wanted to know I'm getting P2098 and P2096 Post catalyst fuel trim system too lean bank one and two. Still looking at which tune I want just a little disappointed that this happened with the Berks wish I went with CNT or another HFC less expensive now...

Since it's getting the codes I specifically bought these damn cats so I don't run into code issues -.-

Edit for update: I cleared the codes already but took it to the shop I had installed them and they were able to scrounge around for some steel wool he shoved that in there. Will update in another couple hundred miles to see if this fixes it. Hopefully will have exhaust and tune by then so that would fix it anyway. But just in case for those who want to know if the steel wool method works I will know in about a week maybe less two at the most.

"Post Catalyst" is the name of the code which leads me to believe these are the rear O2 sensors. "Post" meaning after.

I bought the vibrant j bungs when i did my hfc's and i haven't had a single issue. They're bolt on and super easy to put in.

Even with the wool I threw the code definitely going to need to run a turn or extenders but I'm getting a tune anyway. Just have to get up to z1

i guarantee you, you have a leak. im on my second set of BERKS and ran FI hfc no cell, the first set of BERKS threw a cel and it was because of a leak.

NefariousZ34 06-06-2015 08:49 PM

Where was the leak and if it was a leak it should just be throwing one code not both lets say it was on the left side then I would just be throwing a bank one running lean I would think not both bank one and two are running lean?

Update?

Just reading the thread and wondering if there is an update or more insights?
I just installed Berks HFC as well and threw a code for both downstream O2 sensors. The leaky gasket theory doesn't hold logic since both sides threw codes.

Should have got the AAM Competition HFC’s I had them on every Z I had and I never once got a CEL due to the HFC’s. You all are not the first people I heard getting a CEL after the Berks HFC’s install. Any update or fix found?

A buddy with 2018 Nismo installed them (AAM HFC) and got CEL.

He did Tune and disabled.

Ignore him. He does nothing but suck AAM **** all over this forum. Every shop has their nutswingers. Just put him on your ignore list and spare your brain cells the pain of his gibberish.
