Replace the exhaust

Hello there,

Sadly, Invidia exhauste on my Z got burn out and have to replace it. I was stop by the Nissan service center and they asked me $4600 to replace it to OEM, I think they also charged on CAT too. I'm planning to buy an exhauste for Invidia again but not sure for cat replacement. I talked with my buddy who has some idea about car, he told me the code PO420 which I got for SES can be occured because of O2 sensor, CAT or exhauste. How should I know what parts do I have to replace for PO420? My exhauste looks burn out (color is almost yellow) but as far as I know, lifespan for cat is quite long. Does anyone can tell me how to make a decision for it? Also, my buddy recommend me to replace O2 sensor in this time if it doesn't expensive.

CATs are designed to last a long long time. So unless you have rust issues, it should be okay. How did our exhaust get burned out? Are you running FI? Something sounds strange.

Step 1 - drop your dealership
Step 2 - call one of the many reputable shop sponsors in the forum or AAM, Fast Intentions, Motordyne, Ark, Stillen etc.
Step 3 - take notes and decide.
Step 4 - $ave money you may stand up straight and stop bending over.

I don't know what FI means. Sorry. My Z has about 90k miles, I bought as used and it came with Invidia exhauste installed. So, I actually have no idea how does it burned out. I just heard it from local shop, they told me the point where cat and exhuaste are attached got cracked and color of exhauste is light brown or yellow.

Stay away from the dealers. If you look in the "for sale section", someone is always selling a stock exhaust system for a fraction of what the dealer will steal from you.
As posted above, cat are designed to last a long time. I would say cats in modern vehicles have more than 9 lives. That is unless you live up north (salt/winter times) or there are crazy speed bumps in your area and you have tried to flatten those with your exhaust system.

FI = Forced induction, fuel injection, fast intentions, fags incorporated, faulty imbecile, fast intercourse and the list can go on and on.

Earlier versions of the Invidia Gemini had issues with the flex pipes failing, causing exhaust leaks. Is that what you are referring too?

A code 420 is one of the most difficult and annoying trouble codes in any car system and can literally be caused by hundreds of different things. O2 sensors "sometimes" are the cause, but from my experience its not common. The only thing rear of the secondary O2 sensors that could cause a code or running problem is a blocked exhaust. If your invidia muffler is old and the glass packing inside comes apart, it can cause a restriction. Is this what you mean by it got burnt out?

I have a stock exhaust taking up room. If your interested,pm me and we can work something out. But to be honest, your best off replacing the section that has been compromised. Best of luck.

Buy a set of used HFCs / test pipes and a used cat back. I'll bet you can have all the parts you need for under $1k. And for the love of God, never go to that dealer again. They're ripping you off big time.

Or you can buy my custom quad exhaust for half the price ($2500)! it cost us $6500 to build it! it comes with test pipes too! Everything is Vband so the install is a piece of cake and takes less than an hour... You will spend more time taking off your stock exhaust. Check it out in the for sale section.
