Advice: Has anyone had neighbors etc. complain about the loudness of their ex...

Hey guys ill be moving to a new area (renton, washington near seattle). Im coming from south carolina where no one minds anything about exhaust loudness and emissions, and was wondering what other people's experiences were with exhaust loudness especially cold start. Have any of you guys had neighbors complain, and if so can anything be done to you?

All help greatly appreciated!!

370Z JT 03-01-2015 05:12 PM

I start the car with the garage door down and cruise in and out of the neighborhood at low rpms. Just be respectful and considerate.

Nut_N_Much 03-01-2015 06:01 PM

Yep, idle out the gate, get on the main road and gun it :rofl2:

Tombonombona 03-01-2015 06:03 PM

Once when I had a straight piped subie... But like everyone said, don't be a bro, just idle out of the neighbourhood.

jooonnn 03-01-2015 06:52 PM

Awesome feedback guys, i guess i should have highlighted the fact that my cold start will be a lot louder in the northwest vs down here in the south

I tell them if they think my car is loud you should hear my truck, then I go get my truck! LOL

But honestly, my one neighbor is fine, he drive a big truck, the other side has a Subbie with exhaust and a '69 GMC with a lumpy SBC in it.

mag_black 03-01-2015 09:43 PM

Drive normal in and out of my neighborhood. 1. there's kids everywhere 2. being respectful. I won't even rev my car in my neighborhood. I go to work at 10am, so I haven't had any issues w/ waking neighbors up.

axmea? 03-01-2015 10:29 PM

I leave between 5:00 and 6:30 am for work and have to warm it up and let it idle for a good 5 minutes so it gets pretty loud in the morning. No complaints so far. You have to be respectful and not rev like the neighborhood jerk. I did notice my neighbor buy a car louder than the oneI before it.

derraj06 03-02-2015 12:04 AM

I have more conversations with the police in my area than neighbors. I back it up away from people and once it gets past cold start it's quiet on the idle out of the front gate. Once I get to the highway no one cares.

Police don't like it downtown if I forget to turn off SRM. On a positive note, I know a lot of the cops that patrol where I work and they like the car.

Just dont leave your car outside, if your car gets vandelized or so then you know your neighbors are pissed. Lol

FPenvy 03-02-2015 10:58 AM

exhaust too loud? solution: kill neighbors

serious note: I am running straight pipes and they are ungodly loud. I have not gotten complaints. only issue I had was based on the volume and look some dbag on my drive to work accused me of speeding and whatnot.

but I agree with the others of being gentle in your neighborhood. it's all about respect. you show your neighbors some by not going balls deep in the throttle then they are less likely to bitch.

I do feel bad when I start mine at 7am cold starts are on a different level. even more so since I start it up inside the garage.

Japanjay 03-02-2015 08:43 PM

Oh boy, you are in store for the renton area. Lol. I am from charlotte, close to the SC line and anything pretty much goes down there. I currently live in the seattle area. Some get hasseled a lot, with my current exhaust which goes over 130db, maxed of my db meter on the dyno at around 4k rpms, never had a problem with the police. But I get asked all the time if I have gotten a ticket yet. Z1 test pipes and a tomie exhaust. Soon getting the old momentum headers.

Japanjay 03-02-2015 08:50 PM

They are pretty bad in the renton area, police speaking regarding modified cars, but they usually don't bother the nice cars, only ticket the Hondas and **** boxes rolling around.

Dang thats pretty loud haha! Have you heard of anyone getting a ticket? Also did you have to emission test your Z when you transferred it to washington?

So is it really illegal to have an aftermarket exhaust in washington state? Or is that an old rule that was thrown out and superseded by federal rule of meeting a certain loudness

And we have a Infiniti and Nissan club up here called PNW_INC. Our club takes best infiniti and Nissan at most shows. We have the nicest infiniti's and Nissans in the pacific northwest in this club. Invite only, but if you get out here come to the shows and you will spot the clubs logo.

Tadpole 03-02-2015 09:00 PM

No worries ever in Texas. Cars, bikes, and trucks everywhere running loud pipes. No one cares and no one complains.

Japanjay 03-02-2015 09:02 PM

State law was originally set to 95db, but then the Washington state patrol pssed a bill a few years ago that changed it to anything other than "stock", so yes you can get a ticket for it, no one in our club has gotten one in a while from what I know, have over a hundred members. I have hands down by a mile the loudest and most noticeable exhaust and haven't had any issues in the year I have been disturbing the peace with it. But yes they can ticket you, but mostly the chit boxes get the tickets. 2009+ have no emission testing in this state.

Japanjay 03-02-2015 09:08 PM

I was expecting to be doing a lot of this when I bought the tomie and the Z1 test pipes. But haven't had to yet, and I don't plan on taking it off either. http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...psc7d5d0b7.jpg

Great to know! im debating whether to spend the long hours installing headers if its a "fix it" ticket, as test pipes would be easier to put on and off.

Spend the hours, no inspections or emission tests. I am going to be picking up a set of momentum and his Z1 manny hopefully soon.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it is not good quality.

Do some research on the good exhaust brands. F.I. ,ARK, Stillen, Motordyne etc. Lots of good options out there.

abm89 03-03-2015 10:45 AM

I've had a few notes on the car. I just blame the dude with the raspy V6 Mustang who actually hits it leaving the complex all the time.

I don't go WOT after starting the car anyway. I don't feel like busting a sandwich-plate seal.

ANMVQ 03-03-2015 12:00 PM

I used to leave that early also, 530ish, I let my car run for a good 8-10 mins in the winter before I move it, but along with everyone else I never lay on it in my neighborhood.

well i know its a cheap exhaust but do you think it'll sound some what good for a cheap exhaust because i do want a cheap exhaust for a temporary since im gonna save up for rims and bodykit as my first real mods

1st 03-03-2015 02:29 PM

Sounds like a waste of money just save and when the time is right buy a legit one.

Gabri 03-03-2015 02:36 PM

but would this be better than a top speed axle back or a aam short tail ? since this cat back is nearly the same price

I don't think it will sound good or last long. Save up a little bit longer and find a quality, used exhaust from the classifieds here if you are on a budget. I've done "temporary" mods on previous cars and they are a waste of money in the long run. My motto with the Z is do it right and do it once.

roplusbee 03-17-2015 08:37 AM

:iagree: Well said

In TX, I used to start mine up around 0515-ish and leave around 0530-ish. When I was in Italy (different car, but similarly loud cold start), I would get on the road at about 0500. The only complaints I ever received were my neighbors being late because they used my car starting a gauge on whether they needed to get going or not.
