Motion Lab VQ37HR Build

We’ve been busy here at Motion Lab! A longtime customer of ours started a build for his 370Z not too long ago. His goal is to get as close to 600whp as possible. The customer started by sending a running VQ37HR long block to us to build with forged components.

After it has been built we’re sending it off to New York. Our normal supplier for rods and pistons do not make parts for the VQ37 so he opted for Carrillo H-beam rods and a set of custom ordered Wiseco pistons (stock bore). And ARP hardware will be used to hold everything together. Boosted Performance’s mid mount turbo kit with a Precision T4 6266 (gen 2) turbo will be force feeding the motor.

Oh, this should be good. What turbine housing does the customer have?

Let me know if you need anything from this end.

ANMVQ 10-10-2014 08:00 AM

Nice Alex, Cant wait to see how this comes out! He's in good hands :)

TopgunZ 10-10-2014 09:56 AM

What compression ratio is he going for? Tuning off pump 91,93?

Thanks Sasha! He opted for the 1.15A/R T4 divided if I remember correctly. Look forward to tuning another one of your kits. Also have my other local BP 6266 customer coming back for a EBCS so we can get a nice flat boost curve out of it versus spiking to 10psi and tapering to 7-8psi. Should make the top end look a bit nicer :).

Thanks man, always appreciate your continued support! Look forward to seeing the power curve on this one

Tuning on 93OCT, and potentially some VP race gas in the future just to get some really pretty numbers out of it lol. 9:1CR Wiseco pistons w/ anti friction skirt coating are being used with a 95.5mm bore size.

We will be utilizing OE bearings with a dry film coating to increase load capacity and reduce friction. Heads will remain stock except for a proper 3angle valve job.

Thanks,
Alex Goodwin

For a built engine I would really push for the 1.32 housing. The EBP is something to consider, as these engines Rev high and have an incredible VE.

I will relay that to him. I agree about the housing size and VE of these motors, largely in part thanks to the cylinder heads. I was already chirping in his ear about the larger hotside to make sure we don't end up with excessive back pressure at 6000+RPM killing the top end performance. We may to an electronic cutout to make sure we alleviate any back pressure on the exhaust side of this sucker :driving:

Looking forward to seeing where 20psi might put us on pump gas

Thanks,
Alex Goodwin

20 psi! I thought his goal was close to 600...? We have guys hitting 600 around 12psi. I hit 533 at 10lbs.

What does he plan to do about his MAF situation? Does he have the GTM ones?

Im going with 11:1 compression with Arias pistons tuning off E85 to reduce spool time. I plan to set it around 15 psi and plan to easily break 600. I would go up to 17 or so but I will max out my 3" intake tubes at 15.

Boosted Performance 10-10-2014 03:00 PM

18 psi is probably going to be near the upper limit on pump gas. With that, 650whp on a dynojet should not be a problem, provided he goes with the 1.32 a/R housing and fuel support is there. This is based on results I have seen with the twin scroll kits on the VQ35.

Nissan370 10-11-2014 06:06 PM

This is going to be fun to watch. I am also going to be going as far as i can on pump gas before switching over to e85.
I am hoping to hit the 600+rwhp mark spring on 93 and 700+ on e85

This would be nice, but e85 is hard to come by for us Marylanders. You could always order a 55 gallon drum on tap lol.

If your doing that I'd rock out with e98! As much ethanol as you can get without paying an alcohol tax! LOL.

If buying by the drum I would probably do the same... E98, but I would probably mix it down to a typical E78ish or so. Get more mileage for your trouble of dealing with the drums.

Neo187H 10-13-2014 02:50 PM

I'm a bit late to the party having been out of town for work but this is my car and the whole plan is a bit of a work in progess still as far as fuel and the likes.

This setup is being built to replace the Stillen kit that sits on my car curently, I already have the UpRev MAFs and will transfer them over to this when the time comes.

shameless plug: someone buy my uprev gt mafs lol

Slightly off topic but why does no one use these?

depends on the size of your maf tubes, on the greddy/GTM TT kits with 3" maf tubes you are good until around low to mid 600's I believe, and then you run out of voltage

Then upgraded MAFs.

I would second this if i came across a drum of e98 and lived where you guys are because e98 has really bad cold starting. like if theres snow on the ground good luck starting your' car bad.

Most people don't make enough power necessitate the upgraded MAF sensors. Like most are saying are around 600WHP is when you generally see the voltage getting near maximum (5V).

Yeah fuels like that take some tweaks when the weather gets cold, especially with bigger injectors. Nothing is impossible though if your tuner knows how to properly scale injectors!

Bro it hit -45F last year in WI it is impossible to light e98 at that temperature, let alone pump it into the engine. I knew guys that ran straight E and they would actually put in a 2 gallon sub tank to start the motor on gas and get it warm enough for the e to light. If it gets colder than 30degrees where you live don't even think of running straight ethanol.

At -45F I'm not going outside, much less driving anywhere. :rofl2:

Yeah that's pretty cold.... didn't realize we were talking absolutely extreme temperatures like that.

Block is at the machine shop currently getting the piston to wall clearance set, line honed for the main studs, micropolishing the crankshaft, balancing the assembly, and valve jobbing the heads. The OE bearings will be coated to help reduce friction and increase load capacity, and fully blueprinted as everything we build is. Hopefully they can turn it around for us in about 2-3weeks so we can share more progress.

Had to wait forever for the Carrillos to arrive, well worth it for a rod you can depend on though.

Thanks,
Alex Goodwin

TopgunZ 10-16-2014 01:49 PM

Thats why they make "winter" blends of E70 vs. E85.

I got myself a pair of those upgraded MAF's! :happydance:

The wait is killing me though. My Z has been down since June!!! Wish I had gone IPP instead of building it local.

1slow370 10-16-2014 03:00 PM

yeah the blended stuff will light ok when it is cold, all i am saying is straight E is a spring-fall only thing.

Man I've really gotta hurry up getting the old engine and SC kit outta the car so it's ready for this monster.

I ended up speaking more in depth with BP and going with the larger hotside turbine so better top end.

I'm doing close to the same built motor setup good luck with ur build would like to see the results.

Well in the words of Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part. Hope to have more progress here in the coming weeks.

After a long wait for the main bearings, we finally got the components back from the machine shop. Finally, ready to start reassembly!
