Bobby has been great keeping me updated the past week. He pulled the motor on Sunday and broke down the shortblock today to find oil starvation on bearings and rings. Most likely from excessive G's.

Glad I chose to rebuild this thing.

Following COSMO's thread as well, I ordered blackstone kit. Maybe I should buy a magnetic oil plug as well. Been meaning to do so for my differential as well. Im sure I've cooked the oil in that thing at the track. If only differential coolers weren't so expensive.

Plan is to assemble by next Monday, the 13th, throw a hundred miles on it, tune it on Thursday and back to me over the weekend.

I can't explain how bad im itching for this thing to be back, but importantly for it to be back to me right. Again, one of the reasons why I went with VSR. Yes, it may take a little longer than expected, but Bobby does follow through (at least from what's been documented on this forum).

Also picked up an 3qt accusump, oil filter relocation kit, and thermostat. Just gotta find a place to mount it.

Motor assembled and nearly back into the car!

Plan is to put a few miles on it before tune Thursday.

so you have a motor being built and they couldn't pull the dowels and deck it? was it even honed? It even looks like theres some swirl up there like they commited the mls gasket no-no of using a scotchbrite wheel to clean off the gasket instead of using a fine scraper and a scrub with a rag so you don't eff up the Ra 4-6 surface on the deck.

mad_jelly 10-13-2014 04:06 PM

im not sure if it's completely necessary, but im a noob so i'll leave the decisions to the professional (who are also going to warranty the block). Surely they have their reasons from their experience.

I know the heads were done.

leaving that surface won't blow the engine per say it just makes the HG more likely to fail prematurely

Edit: The other companies that build these motors (GTM, IPP, Jtran) all deck the blocks to a new finish.

mad_jelly 10-13-2014 06:23 PM

^ makes sense. I'll bring it up on my call. Thanks for looking out :)

some machine shops will NOT deck a block unless you request it or they have to, its removing material. you do not need to deck a block to get proper head gasket seal

So true on having that stuff done right. Once you get that girl back in the car and start putting the power to her. The small stuff starts to rear its ugly head.

It all depends on the head gasket and they way it was removed, and the intended use of the motor. MlS gaskets need a smooth finish to seal right, the best way to do this is to take .005-.01 off the deck just enough to cut the corrosion from the coolant and the old imbeded gasket off and ensure a flat deck, this is more important on a FI build (which is probably why the other shops that build these motors do it). If you intend to not deck the block, no power tools should be used to remove the old gasket, it should be done with a fine razor scrapper without scratching the head, and the remaining traces should be scrubbed off with a rag and gasket remover or brake cleaner. After which the block should be checked for flatness, using a scotchbrite wheel on an air grinder is going to scratch the deck and leave areas where the gasket will not seal right.

Can you elaborate anymore on the 3qt accusump and oil filter relocation kit? I'm guessing that is going to combat the oil starvation issue.

Thanks

1slow370 10-14-2014 03:01 PM

the accusump is one line plumbed into the pressure side and is basically an air spring cylinder so as preussure comes up it fills the accusump with oil and as it comes down the accusump will discharge to slow the rate of pressure drop in the oil galley for a short time.

It's also called the poor man's dry sump system. It serves two purposes, pressurizes the system on start up and also maintain pressure for a short period of time when the car loses pressure (due to bad pickup).

One of my favorite tracks but one that also destroys porsches

Great news! Car is tuned.

Bad news. Stock Nismo exhaust is holding the car back. The Nismo S tune exhaust is different on the 350, its a single 3" with a good amount of baffling in the muffler.

Big Thanks to Bobby and VSR for working into the night getting the car together. Its been a great journey so far and its far from over.

There are a few more loose ends to pick up before the car can be shipped back. Regardless, I am siked to get the car back.

Of course, rough result:

6 psi = 380 whp
8 psi = 420 whp
13 psi = 500 whp

Don't have torque figures, but im sure its way more than the 260 lb-ft I had before. Again, the stock exhaust seems to be holding a good bit of that power back. Glad Bobby and VSR built that block. Once I put my big boy pants on, maybe I'll "invest" in a more free flowing exhaust and really unleash the single turbo's potential.

Next steps include a shake down to get all of the bugs out, data log to refine any potential rough spots, throw some larger tires on the car, and just enjoy my first car out of college as it should have came out of the factory

I'll post up dyno's when I get them.

A little honeymoon reflection (still early and i'll update as I go forward):
IMO, the true value in a performance shop is how they handle "incidents" as incidents will inevitably arise. Every shop has their oopies, more importantly though, Bobby has made right their oopies (based on the threads i've read on 370z). I hope my story is free of incidents, but knowing that Bobby will come through regardless really settles the mind.

MidnightBlueZ 10-17-2014 03:21 PM

Nice numbers! Post your dyno sheet if you can get it. It does sound like the exhaust is holding you back especially on the high boost map. Can you not get Bobby to fab up a free flowing one to mate to their downpipe?
