HKS Boost Controller Settings
 

Hi Guys,

Trying to wrap my head around this new boost controller (EVC 6 Color).

Anyways does anyone know much about tuning these? It pretty much comes down to two main settings. Your idea peak boost and your offset. The first is pretty self explanatory but its the offset that is driving me a bit crazy.

The boost controller is a PWM valve that modulates boost to the wastegates, it operates anywhere from 0-100% depending on the inputs.

So my understanding is the HKS brain is going to manipulate the PWM to get the desired maximum boost. Now I understand that there is a delay in response from the PWM and that this speed of changing the PWM can be manipulated to ensure that the boost does not overshoot the desired level. Is this what HKS calls their offset?

HKS recommends starting at a 100% offset. Which to me is whatever they determine to be a good starting point for this rate of change of the PWM, correct? Now it would stand to reason that going lower than 100 will slow the rate of change of the PWM and thus result in a slower increase in boost but it will taper off with a smaller overshoot if your target.

Go the other way with the offset and it will start modulated quicker resulting in a faster boost increase that will eventually begin to overshoot its target.

Is this all correct?

The reason I am asking is I have my boost controller set at 11psi and currently at a offset of 60% I am still seeing a spike upwards of 11.8-11.9. So I would naturally continue to keep lowering this offset, however by doing this I am also slowing the response of the controller when the boost comes on. I am starting to feel it come on a bit slower now but I am still getting the typical overshoot.

Part of me thinks I could lower the target boost a couple points and then live with the overshoot, but I think thats not the correct way to tune the controller.


Any suggestions? There is next to no info on any of the forums out there about HKS settings (for any of their boost controllers).
