Did you have to ask for extra coverage? I have USA as well, and have for close to ten years now.

i didnt(granted im N/A but even if i was FI i wouldnt tell them), if my mods are at the point where i can not salvage them if in a wreck, the car is toast anyways and its time to upgrade

I wouldn't do it for things like intakes but I have done somewhere around $15K in upgrades in the last 6 months and most of them are in the nose of the car.

i think you and i have different definitions of salvageable

like hypothetically speaking if i were FI, replacing an intercooler and piping wouldnt cost too much if god forbid something happens to the front and i was at fault, but since the turbos are salvageable chances are the car can be fixed, however if i were to get into an accident so bad that the entire kit needs to be replaced, the car is pretty much toast and it would be time for me to upgrade

i dont know if that makes any sense but thats how i have always seen things with my cars, now having the extra insurance might be worth it if the car was stolen that way you are not out 15k for all the upgrades you spent

They just said something about making sure to have photos and invoices to prove what was on the car. They were completely "ok whatever" about it. Although, I did not and would not mention anything about racing or track use!

You have to figure that the money you have in mods is pretty minor situation for them compared to the medical bills they have to pay when people get hurt. I dont get the impression that the details of the car matter a whole lot to them.

Another +1 for state farm. As long as it is not wheel to wheel racing my agent didn't havea issue with is at all. HPDE stuff is what I asked about.

Necro REVIVE!!!!!

I'm looking into buying insurance to cover my mods once I get her back. I DD my car so I think it's the smart investment. With my car's depreciation and mods, she is only worth like 40k. Who here has insured their mods and how much did it increase?

I insured my mods with State Farm. I took them invoices for everything which ended up being over $30K. Premium increased about $15 a month but the car is insured for $55K.

I told Geico about my supercharger and my wheels, kit and coilovers and my rate didn't move at all. I'm also in the military, so I don't know if that had a factor in it at all. It's also not my daily driver.

I learned the hard way and lost 6Gs, tell your insurance company get the extra insurance. My old Z got totaled from just the airbags. I got my Stillen SC done less then a year ago and maybe 3,000 miles on the kit. Car was totaled thought I would be good, USAA ONLY COVERS 5Gs with receipts and you are getting a deprecated value. I got less then 2Gs from sway bars, brake lines, oil cooler, SC, exhaust, suspension with mods. Then the insurance company decided to view my old Z as a one off and I got 4,500 for the SC. When I paid 9Gs for everything. So total 11-12Gs for everything I had done and got a little over half back.

Tell the insurance company get your mods covered, don't believe that USAA will cover everything.

USAA I told them I had modifications etc. They said they had a extra $5,000 over value and I could add an extra 20% of the value of the car also. Was like an extra $14 a month.

I doubled the amount of coverage on my car and it dropped my bill 5$ a month. The lady didn't understand why so she called the underwriters just to have it confirmed. All that's needed is proof of the mods and prices

YzGyz 06-12-2015 11:12 PM

I'll be insurance shopping tomorrow I think. GEICO only covers 5k in mods. State Farm said they insure the car then add a rider or a omething like that for the amount in mods.

I made the mistake of telling American Family and at first it was no big deal. I got a call a couple days ago from my agent telling me the underwriters have decided not to renew my policy because apparently a turbo kit makes my car faster. Morons.

I just checked out Progressive's website. It looks like for aftermarket parts, you are covered for up to $1,000, but you can purchase additional coverage for up to $5,000, totaling $6,000 altogether. That's based solely on what I found on their website, so I don't know if they'll do any more than that.
