GTM TT: Cooling Upgrade Wishlist
The past month has been a scorcher with ambient temps hitting 111F and breaking records. Even for a force fed daily driver (possibly with air in the cooling system, but recently flushed again), my oil temps hit 220-235 in stop and go traffic, and the water temps climbed fast the 60% mark. I try to baby the car, so it doesn't see much boost with this kind of weather.
I'd like to upgrade various component for next summer. Please excuse my ignorance in regards to the combination and fitment of these components. I may step up to a larger Setrab oil cooler and have it custom mounted similar to the picture below. With an aluminum undertray, perhaps it can be cut and ducted to direct air towards the cooler from underneath the bumper. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1222711912.jpg CSF Radiator + Condenser Combo: 370Z Upgraded Radiator with Condenser GTM Fan Kit: GTM Motorsports*::*COOLING SYSTEM*::*GTM Fan SHROUD Kit For Z34/V36 I know the GTM kit requires an OEM radiator for proper fitment, so perhaps we can discuss effective combinations for improved cooling. Aside from all that, I would definitely try to vent the hood and fender trim to expel heat especially with the fans running. Don't forget, I'd like to update the software to allow the fans to kick in sooner. When it was super hot outside I lifted the hood and all that heat from the bay nearly burned my face while the fans were running. |
I have the Greddy turbo pan,CSF radiator,25 row oil cooler,25 row trans cooler,2 Spal 6.5 in fans, and I don't go over 205 with pretty hard driving in 100deg weather.

Oh yes! I almost forgot about the oil pan. Are you using a thermostatic oil cooler sandwich plate? I have the adapter, but don't know if it's thermostatic. I just notice it takes a lot longer for oil to warm up in the winter.
Also, how much oil does it take now? 6 qt? I'm currently at 195-210F on a freeway cruise without the A/C running. Water temps are stable (7th tick), but it's nowhere near 105-111F ambient this week. This is with an aftermarket gauge and sensor though. |

a stillen front bumper will help you as well for cooling, it has a huge opening......I don't have turbo, just N/A but track the car, oil temps dropped after the new bumper...
|
I have been kicking around the idea of doing a remote oil cooler, possibly with fan, perhaps in the space left by losing the OEM exhaust and going to FI. Basically like a diff cooler, but cooling engine oil instead. I think the length of oil lines themselves would probably add a quart or more to the total system. I am just not convinced that packing more coolers into the crowded front of the car is the best solution. I know it is working for people, but I am always trying to think of cool new things to do. I think the side mounted oil coolers + Stillen or Zele bumpers or the like would also work well, but with OEM bumper it's tough to get adequate flow.
I am jealous of the G37 guys that have the larger grill and can put a cooler up above the radiator that gets direct airflow. I wonder if the panel right above the radiator opening on the Z could be designed with, e.g., NACA ducts to get some direct cooling flow to a cooler mounted in a similar position on the Z. |
I have that 72 row in the picture. It is outstanding in hot weather and definitely has overhead for a forced induction setup. What I'm thinking is to look for a vented hood. When I was doing dynos for two hours straight and runs within two minutes of eachother, oil temps never ran over 185F. And it definitely didn't feel like i was going to combust from all the heat escaping the engine compartment and hitting me in the face. It was notably cooler.

^ vented hood helps as well, I added a vented hood for track days as well, heat just comes out like crazy...... u can see the heat waves...

I have the Seibon TS hood, you can see the stillen bumper as well
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...10722008_n.jpg Here you can see how much bigger the front opening is on the stillen bumper If you have the oil cooler on the side instead of infront of the radiator then this should help you a lot as well.... http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...14422923_n.jpg |
I'm not a fan of the Stillen bumper and will keep it stock. We still need vents for the fender well trim, and it is fairly exposed from the bay without the air boxes. Perhaps I will modify it someday. As for the hood I like the UAM one, but it would be nice to mod the OEM hood with this design. I'm not too crazy about CF hood for the long term either.
Good to know about the extra large setrab oil cooler. On to GTM fans and CSF radiator...?? |
I think CSF radiator is a good place to start. I love the GTM options, but I find the pricing unpalatable.

What brand Produce 72 Rows and is this an oil cooler or tranny cooler? |
I thought with FI/turbo etc upgraded radiator was a must? At the track also a few Z's are seeing the temp go up and some upgrade as well, I will try to datalog the temps one of these days at the track.
|
My friends would love for me to take my Z out to the track, but it is NOT track ready especially when it gets this hot on 100F+ ambient temps. There was no intention of tracking this car with the current setup, but it's nice to have piece of mind with upgraded cooling components and ventilation for daily driving and track it when the time comes. So far after flushing and bleeding the system temps are stable in the normal range with 100F ambient temps.

With the 34 row GTM oil cooler and CSF radiator, I see oil temps sitting between 195-215 with the ambient temp reading 100-105. Even driving it hard, I've only seen a high of 225. Keep in mind, I'm still running conventional oil since the car only has 7k miles. I expect to see a 5 degree drop in oil temp once I switch to synthetic oil.
The water temp will move from one dot below halfway to two dots above, but the guys at Baker Tuning assured me it's really a 8-9 degree swing in temps due to the water-cooled turbos dumping a lot of heat into the coolant. The temp drops back to normal in about 90 seconds of driving, so I'm not too concerned. One of these weekends I'll vent the fender liner and ditch the coolant for water and water wetter. Maybe a fan for the oil cooler with a temp sensor before next summer. I'd love a vented hood, but it's a daily driver and Houston experiences some serious rain. |
When u see 2 dots above middle does ur ad shut off ?
Mine shuts of when it reaches 1 dot past middle :shakes head: |
Mine is always 2 dots to the left of center even in 100 deg days
Plus I reset my cooling fans at 60% @ 192,85% @ 196,100% @ 201 Logging my temps. With the rom editor my engine temp has not gone over 208 deg. |
Nice, Chuck. Ambient temps barely touch 100 this week, so I'm seeing oil temps around 190-205. Are you only pushing 6 PSI at the moment? It's fun at 9 PSI. :)
|
6? No. It spikes to 9, but it drops back to 7psi by redline.

I am at (I have a SC):
CSF Radiator 25 row oil cooler To do: Nismo front bumper with Zspeed undertray with vents Greddy oil plan <-This is the big one I think |
I have a question for those with a vented hood. Besides when you are parked or not moving, do you see any benefit to the hood? Has anyone tested to see if air is flowing outward of the vents while driving?
The reason I ask is because many times a vented hood is great when you idle but when driving a vacuum is created under the hood and to properly release air to cool it might not be the same. |
If colder air is entering the engine bay than what is presently there, the higher pressure of the cold air will five the hot air to go somewhere else, whatever the path of least resistance is. For the record, its an AE performance oil cooler. The radiator is a Setrab. They are big on Porsches and Z's.
