Ram Air

Has anyone tried the ram air, by removing the fang plates(pros -cons)

Ram air for what? You can remove the fang plates but then you need to direct the air somewhere for it to do anything.

There is a mod for that on this forum.

Its gotta make some difference if done right. I think the intakes would have to be insulated from the engine heat to tho. I think itll work only because it would lower intake temps but i can see it being too signifgant as in power wise. i COULD BE WRONG THO

this has been brought up before. i think someone was testing the gen 3 stillen with and without a front bumper. they had fans blowing on the filters in one test. the outcome wasnt a huge increase in power. actually i think there were issues with turbulence.

our factory intake system isnt that bad to begin with.

:iagree: It's very efficient.

your better off making duct work for the brakes. there is very lil to gain by home depot-ing your front end.... :\

How about a front splinter made from garden liner?

Didn't think ram air was good enough for my Mustang, definitely won't do it to my Z. Save your $ for some real intakes. The cost for MAF tubes and drop ins will probably be marginally more than a ram air diy.

Even if you carefully measure everything properly to get it flowing right, you'd be lucky to see .1 psi added at 60+ mph.

A fun project, and you should do some searching on how to do it right if you really want, but honestly not worth the effort unless this a track only car, and every little bit of power is critical.

:iagree: "Ram air" is typically a misnomer in the automotive context. To truly get compression of air above ambient into the cylinders (i.e. ram it in), you have to be going VERY fast and have to use an appropriate shape of the intake duct. It's not as simple as having a windward facing intake. Typically, the gains from such "ram air" type setups for an automobile is just the access to cooler less restricted air.

Jordo! 03-05-2012 12:07 PM

BTW, ducting to force cool air to the intake makes more sense with a carburetor as they were mounted to the top of the engine, and not remotely the way it is set up on modern fuel injected cars.

buy 4 Kawisaki zx14r ram air tubes hook them up in your hood, and go 180mph.
