How much do these FI kits weigh?

One thing I haven't seen discussed much is how much each of these popular kits weigh (e.g. GTM stage 1 and 2 SC, GTM turbo, Stillen SC, etc). Since a lot of this weight is going to be hung over the nose of the car, I am curious how much it is adding.

Best way to find out is to have those companies weigh them out. I'm pretty sure it weighs less than 100lbs

Jeffblue 10-10-2011 03:54 PM

the heaviest parts would be the turbos/manifolds

Nixlimited 10-10-2011 08:19 PM

Yeah, was hoping that GTM and Stillen may chime in here.

65-75lbs for GTM tt

Just weighing the boxes and/or components aren't really going to give you a precise answer because there are parts that get swapped out.

One thing I can say, is that the extra weight we do add, is as low as possible to keep your center of gravity lower. Especially our Supercharger kit...you really can't get much lower than that. Also, for the more hardcore racers, the Supercharger sits on the passenger side of the engine bay which will make it more helpful when corner balancing the car.

All that said, it seems that most people adding forced induction don't seem to be the hardcore racers that agonize over ever last ounce on their car and where it is in relation to the center of gravity. Hell, Fontana Nissan's 350Z race car is N/A and whoops a$$ on the track. I watched that car walk on their own GTR race car. So if you are looking for the ultimate cone dodger or road course machine, getting the car as light as possible is going to benefit all the aspects of road racing that make it fun. Braking late, keeping your cornering speed high and putting the power down early are massive advantages compared to just going balls out on the front straight.

But, not everyone is keen on spending $1-2k on track tires every time they want to have fun in their car. Some people prefer doing a third gear pull with 500whp every now and then just to remind them of how bada$$ their car is.

It really all boils down to preference and your intended use of the car. If you are that concerned about weight and it's distribution, don't put an FI kit on your car. It's that simple. Take that money and put it in lighter wheels, coilovers, sway bars and the like. Make it light and make it stick.

How much on average is all hes saying. Im curious too because theres alot of speculation.

Well, the boxes for the TT kit weigh around 140lbs (depending on options). The box for the Supercharger weighs 85lbs (again, depending on options).

Sorry, but that's about as much concrete info I've got regarding weight of the FI kits we sell.

LafitteZ 10-13-2011 08:09 PM

thats perfect mike. Just an idea is all i was wondering. thanks

I agree with what you're saying. I am not convinced that anyone who is competitively tracking wants to add FI to an NA engine and risk the chance of losing the engine. With all that said, weight on the track is the same as weight on the street--less is better. Just had no idea how much these kits weigh in at. Thanks for the info.

Racing and risk go hand in hand whether it's modified or not...

Sure, less weight is always better, but horsepower is nice too. :happydance:

That said, the stock Z has ~9.73 lbs/hp while a 500hp TT Z has 6.74 lbs/hp.

So, even with an extra 140lbs (conservative estimate), the extra power is well worth it on the TT kit.

:iagree:

good statment mike

not too mention, you can do a multitude of things to improve handling besides worrying about 100 pound kit giving you 200+whp. actually, with you statment i can say that you dont have to worry about stripping the car and it remaining street legal. sticky tires, coilovers, sway bars with a SC or TT kit along with some cooling systems and your set :)

I didn't have chance to weigh the Stillen SC kit but honestly it doesn't add close to 50 lbs from what I see. Stillen manifold with built in intercooler replaces stock manifold. A single CAI replaces dual tube intake system, their injectors replace yours, their fuel pump replaces yours and sits in the back, so youre looking at limited amount of coolant for intercooler and the centrifical superchagers and it's aluminum bracket with lightweight pullies. My guess would be no more than 35 lbs net weight gain with Stillen kit. You can tell Stillen has racing background as they were very careful to not increase front end weight signifantly. However the steel bracket that holds the air filters is a boat anchor!

Net weight gain up front was a consdieration for me. I'm pretty sure I have lighter than stock frontend even with the Stillen kit as I deleted AC, went with 9 lb Braille battery, went with lightweight flywheel, removed windshield washer resevior,

Has anyone weighed individual parts of Stillen kit I'd be Intersted in that data.

Just weighed the stock plastic intake manifold. dang it's a lot heavier than it looks! It weighs nearly 10 lbs. Thats without the cover! i wish I had weighed the Stillen intake as I suspect it doesn't add much weight at all.
