Boost controller

Im a little new to this turbo stuff. I have a gtm twin turbo ordered and I have to decide what boost controller is the best bang for my buck. Im pretty much out of money already but Ill find a way to squeeze some more out if its worth it.

Nixlimited 08-04-2011 01:16 AM

You can just run spring pressure for the time being if you really need to save money, or a less expensive MBC. However, I would go with an HKS unit personally. Makes no sense to drop 10K on a great TT system and skimp on a boost controller.

toner123 08-04-2011 06:38 AM

HKS EVC-S. Nuff said.

Blue370tt 08-04-2011 07:47 AM

I ran without one and had my boost @9psi. Keep in mind that if you have a boost controller, you will be tempted to turn it up more often and this could cause a failure in the car faster (engine, tranny, rear end, etc???).

I agree that HKS is the way to go....if you do.

Nixlimited 08-04-2011 11:08 AM

And just to add, the boost will come on faster with a boost controller. Running spring pressure, it will crack before you hit target boost. It makes boost onset a little less abrupt, but most people with turbos want to get on-boost as quickly as possible.

Prosport Gauges 08-04-2011 12:09 PM

We sell MBC's very well priced and they work awesome.

PM and ill give you a deal on them

98intrigue 08-04-2011 05:16 PM

I have a Blitz SBC ID-3 and I like it. Everyone goes with the HKS. I've heard of no complaints regarding either unit.

phunk 08-04-2011 06:13 PM

Had a EVC 5 in my 350z for 7 years and just moved it to my 370z a month ago, working well.

The SBC ID is another great boost controller. I had one in a previous car, it worked flawlessly. I thought the EVC5 looks a littler nicer, mine is the older one that is silver and lights up with a blue backlight and white letters... the newer EVCs dont light up as nice... I think they are just dim white with black digits like a casio watch

LafitteZ 08-04-2011 06:58 PM

yea i think the evc-s will be the best for the buck. thanks fellas. kit will hopefully be in next week. kits take forever to come in. ill post pics when the build id done. z1 is doing it.

Ron 08-04-2011 08:28 PM

How long has it been since u ordered? I'm lookin to purchase a kit soon and would like to know what to expect. PM me if you don't wanna post it here :)

So, do you guys have any issues with the push button start and shutting the car down?

Seb@SZ 08-05-2011 10:53 AM

I recommend looking at the Blitz SBC iD Spec-R or i-Color units. They work extremely well and are much easier to use.

LafitteZ 08-05-2011 11:49 AM

yea i have no patience sry lololol

Not sure what you are getting at here. The only difference from stock is the feeling you get when pressing the skinny pedal. :D

Prosport Gauges 08-05-2011 02:38 PM

I just dont understand you guys paying nearly $1,000 for a electronic boost controller. Not only are the a pain in the *** to operate its such a waste of money.

Our MBC are designed with special scale plates on them to get spot on boost settings. for 2 of them its $110 shipped. They use Ceramic balls and are very light weight.

Save the money and spend the $800 on some pistons for your future beast :p

It works great. Only issue was that the out of the box settings sets our boost at 18psi... So dial it in or else go Kaaaabooom during your dynotune.

Electronic boost controllers allow the wastegate valve\door to be held closed most of the way up until you want the W\G to open. This allows for better boost response, more power and torque down low. Any pressure up against the WG will cause it to "crack" thus releasing some unwanted exhaust gas to be routed away from the turbine wheel. We've tested manual controllers and the electronic units always made more boost down in the lower RPM range. So the electronic units are well worth the money. MBCs are so 80s... :p

They are relatively expensive. The i-D Spec-R can be had for around $590 so you don't have to buy the $1000 i-Color.

JB-370z 08-06-2011 10:25 AM

I have a HKS EVC

I was putting install into the price. yea there probably pretty goo but it was a best bang for the buck ya know. 350 for hks just seems the right route for now. Anybody else feel differently? I appreciate you guys talking me through this.

Anyone have a turbo timer?

Prosport Gauges 08-06-2011 01:21 PM

We have sold nearly 300 units in 6 months since we released them and not one complaint at all. Not one returned!

Our MBC are good up to GT35's. We are working on stronger springs for the 40r Guys but we get little to no request for those.

They are really easy to use.

I have an Apexi turbo timer installed on my car...but it doesn't keep the ignition running, it keeps the accessory mode running. I probably wired it wrong, but I'm wondering if the push start has something to do with my problem.

Yea you got it hooked up wrong, let me get in the schematics and I'll tell you exactly what wires to hook it up to. Depends on what kit you have if you really need one. As for the people with the GTM kit you really don't need one since it is liquid cooled and just uses oil for the bearings. Also you can get away with not having one just before you shut the car off let it idle for a min or two and you will be good.

Yeah, my turbo is oil cooler...so it would be beneficial to me. I don't know how I messed it up though... 12v, ignition 1 and ignition 2, ebrake, and I didn't bother with the AF wire. It works fine, but it keeps the accessory mode on, not the ignition. Not sure where I went wrong?

roplusbee 08-07-2011 11:51 PM

It is no biggie to me, but it would be nice to be able to go do what I need to do instead of sit in the car for an extra minute or two. I will adapt and overcome..............
