Pistons, Rods, and head studs.

Hey everyone! I bought a stage 2 TT kit for my Z a few months ago, and I'm looking into upgrading some of the internals. Does anyone have an idea of the labor time would be for new pistons-rods and head studs? I'm assuming I'd have to replace my fuel pump/injectors along with that, correct?

SPOHN 05-14-2011 09:06 AM

Why would you buy a TT setup and not really have a clue of what's needed or what has to be done? If you have to ask, maybe you you need to rethink some things and do so searching. Not trying to be an a$$. Just doesn't add up.

A lot of people are running stage 2 setups without upgrading their internals first so I think you're a bit off base.

As to the OP, I would suggest you call GTM or another local shop where you may get your work done. Not many people on this board seem to have that kind of work done yet.

Hey spohn, why would you waist your time posting something completely useless? You're implying everyone out there that wants to enjoy the fun of a forced induction car should go get a mechanics license first? Stop being a douche and try doing something helpful next time, or don't post.

Not wasting. Just doesn't seem like you have clue to what your getting into. You already have purchased a TT kit and your asking if you need a fuel pump. Just seems you need to learn some more things about these setups and what your in for. It's called constructive criticism. I know alot of people can't take that these days.

So on a side note, it would cost you 5K plus for a shortblock and labor. That's a rough estimate

Vinny 05-14-2011 09:30 AM

Thanks nixlimited, I'll do that. I spoke to GTM about 3 weeks ago, And I was supposed to get a package/estimate, but haven't gotten an answer yet. I wanted to get an opinion from members on here before talking with the shop I usually deal with, because they tend to overcharge.

Vinny 05-14-2011 09:32 AM

I have a fuel pump.. I was asking if I needed to upgrade it. I bought the turn-key kit from GTM. Now please don't clutter the rest of my post with your "constructive criticism", I'd like to get some useful advice.

He doesn't really need to know anything about turbo set ups if he has the money to do anything needed.

SPOHN 05-14-2011 09:34 AM

What fuel pump to you have now? What HP do you plan to run? This answer will determine what type of fuel system you'll need to run.

Vinny 05-14-2011 09:37 AM

Walbro 255lph, shooting for 600whp.

In that case (this is MO) I'd run complete return fuel system. GTM stage two kit seen here.

GTM Motorsports*::*FUEL SYSTEM*::*GTM STAGE 2 FUEL SYSTEM

You also could go to this type of fuel pump which is a step up.

Labor time i would assume around 40 hrs. pulling the engine , about 16 hrs to r & r engine plus another 24 (ish) to rebuild engine plus machine shop for balancing. as for fuel pump no and if your keep the boost levels at a reasonable level then no injectors either.

Are you replacing rods/pistions for "piece of mind"? or to turn boost levels up?

Vinny 05-14-2011 09:37 PM

Would be to turn up the boost. Not by much, but reaching for 600whp. I'm assuming im right around 530whp at 10-11 psi, so it wouldnt be too big of a jump I don't think, correct me if I'm wrong.

toner123 05-14-2011 10:38 PM

GTM got 611 WHP out of the fuel pump you currently got installed. If you look in the thread I made about building the block there is some good info in there. I have been waiting for a package price also from sam but no need to rush since this will be done the earliest in winter.

Vinny 05-15-2011 10:04 AM

So in that case, I could potentially keep the same fuel system, and just replace pistons/connecting rods? I was told by another member that head studs were also required, can someone shed some light on this?
Assuming I'm not way off on this, I would think around 15psi would suffice to hit 600whp or darn close, too much for the injectors?
