Anyone running HKS SSQV BOV(s)?

Just like the title states, is anyone running SSQV BOVs or is the majority using something else (like Tial). Curious to hear about any issues these my be having. Had one on my S13 Fastback, but I was running around 11 PSI on a GT2871r CA18DET and it had the recirculate kit (so no sweet chirp during blowoff :ugh2:). Thanks guys............

Rob

Wow, that many views with no posts? I guess poeple are running the Tial that comes with the GTM kit. Can any Greddy kit guys chime in with what you are using for BOV?

I have one in my room. I sometimes walk around with it making car/turbo sounds... : /

kkruel55 04-26-2011 10:06 PM

Dreamer, are you talking about the ones JB currently has or is planning on going with (external, actuated)?

theDreamer 04-26-2011 10:19 PM

I believe he has them on right now.

Boost_lee 04-26-2011 10:55 PM

No personal experience on the Z, but I used to run one on my other car. On low boost I didnt care for it much, i had alot of compressor surge with it.

Switched to a Synapse BOV and I love it.

Billy02987 04-27-2011 09:37 AM

I don't think the GTM kit comes with Tial anymore cause mine came with Turbosmart BOV's.

That was the type of info that I was looking for. I had one on my CA18DET, but I was running about 11 PSI and is worked great. Not so sure how it will handle 6 PSI and from your previous situatiion, sounds like not too well. Thanks for sharing........

That is good info. I am probably going to go with a tuner version of the kit and have Zerolift supply the rest of the items that I need. I was hoping to go the SSQVs, but I may have to go with something else.

SAM@GTM 04-27-2011 03:35 PM

We are still supplying TiAl blow off valves with our Turbo Kits. TiAl ran into some production issues a month ago which made us look into a quick alternative. The Turbosmart is the same size and is very high quality.

I appreciate the clearification. I appreciate even more that you guys made something else work to get my kit out on time. They quality of the turbosmart looks excellent. I'm more then happy with the quality. I'll be even happier when I get to see them in action lol.

Sam, what production issues did they have? My Tial Q BOV arrived in the mail about 2 weeks ago...hope I don't have any issues.

I have HKS BOV's. I think what you are refering to is the external wastegates that I have on order.

-On another note, the HKS BOV's are not having any issues. Sam texted me this morning to remind me that HKS USA is closing down LOl. Thanks Sam. I guess that means more GTM part to come HAHAHA..

LOL!

It is what it is.

roplusbee 04-29-2011 01:27 PM

I didn't know that about HKS USA. I guess the safest move would be to go with the Tial BOVs and just deal with not having the "cool" BOV whistle. Thanks for your input guys.

toner123 04-29-2011 02:18 PM

off topic but not only is HKS usa shutting down, so is frigging Blitz usa or they already did close down. Sam needs to learn jap now lol. Probably going to be harder to get customer support to.

roplusbee 04-29-2011 02:32 PM

I ran a quick search and there are forum posts dating back to DEC 2009 discussing Blitz USA's closure and limited availability of parts. Of course you could still buy parts from their JP branch, but that would cost significantly more money. Looks like we will have to depend on the US brands more and more as time goes on. The positive takeout on this note is that the US brands such as Borla, Magnaflow, Tial, Exedy, and such have stepped up there game and are offering quality parts for our application.

Not sure I would take an Exedy twin plate over an OS Giken, but that may be because I am biased....lol.

I had Tial BOVs on my STi and didn't like them from a sound or performance standpoint. I found that they are a bit more race oriented and not as street friendly. I had a modified Perrin BOV that I loved. I think these days I would look into the Synapse one.

JB-370z 04-30-2011 03:09 PM

Yes, JDM is going away.

kkruel55 04-30-2011 08:08 PM

Just googled difference between BOV and wastegate... I am such a noob >.<

At this point I would not put anything but an HKS BOV on my car. Simply because they sound so good. I need to search a few JDM sites and find the inserts that you can add to make the BOV sound different. Soon I will have my HKS BOV's relocated underneath my hood and I will take a few pics and maybe a video to go with it.

No need for a video, I will demand a ride in it!

roplusbee 05-05-2011 07:40 AM

The SSQV does have an awesome sound, epsecially if you have the gold fins installed. It gives a slightly higher pitched sound than the silver one. the purple one with the circle in the middle is a bit more mild in terms of volume, but I think it gives a subtle screech. Not sure if I like it though. Someone already took the time to give a quick demo of the different fittings on Youtube. Vid below........

toner123 05-05-2011 06:42 PM

stupid question but can we put the hks bov on the gtm stg 2 set up? reason for asking because the ones that come in the kit are a little quite and one day might like the boost in sound.

roplusbee 05-05-2011 07:14 PM

I don't see why that would be a problem. As long as they hold boost without leaking, that is all that should be considered. Some of the guys running "higher" boost on KA-T, SR, and CA setups (like 16 PSI ish) were having issues with the early ones, but I haven't heard anything bad about them in a long time. Not sure what kind of support we will get once HKS USA goes away, but we should be able to get parts from Japan if necessary.

No the flanges are not the same. I had my pipes custom built with the proper flanges to accept the HKS product. Absolutely nothing wrong with the Tail Brand at all, does the job very well and its made in the USA. But for my taste, nothing comes even close to the beautiful sound of an HKS BOV. I still smile really big every time I hear a full boost release. Boost is what dreams are made of :happydance:

JB-370z 05-05-2011 08:57 PM

I wonder if you can just make a adapter and not have to remanufactor the entire pipe

roplusbee 05-05-2011 09:10 PM

Soon I will be L337 like you JB.............

JB-370z 05-05-2011 09:18 PM

What is L337??

roplusbee 05-05-2011 09:25 PM

LEET! lol, just playing around with some of the leet-speak stuff. But for real, soon I will be running TTs and SSQVs w/ the purple attachment.............

LOL, I converted you! The HKS BOV's really do sound that dam good. My buddy has a Tial BOV, on his EVO. It's worked great with no issues for almost 6 years which means at least one real life example of Tial lasting. Another bud with a HKS BOV on his Supra @ 22psi, its also had not issue in the past 8 years hes had it. Might want to find out how to maintenance these bad boys. Maybe oil the seals and moving parts, I have no clue.

Edit: got to have that purple attachment lol.

Boost_lee 05-05-2011 11:54 PM

and to the OP: Just to clarify, I was running one of the older models, probably version 1, with the solid outer housing (no fins).

I also ran with the purple insert, didn't get to try the gold.

The newer model version is probably better, but I'm still pleased with my Synapse for the time being.
