Supercharged VQ37 Goes BOOOM

More power please!

In the quest for more power, owners of the Infiniti G37 and Nissan 370z have forced induction options afforded to them via aftermarket turbo and supercharger kits on the market. Of all the kits on the market, only one of those is fully supported via the factory Infiniti warranty (should there be an issue with the product) and that is Stillen's supercharger kit.

Stillen has been a long time contributor and supporter of the Nissan/Infiniti enthusiast market with performance parts from G to Z with Maxima and others in between. The Stillen kit is listed to provide 515HP-438WHP-343LB/FT of torque @ 8PSI and utilizes a Vortech V3 top-mount supercharger. When installed by certified Infiniti service centers you can actually keep your factory warranty in place instead of voiding it like other kits would should there be issues. Sounds like a great deal to me.

Of course, there are those of us who think of boosting our cars and then there are those who actually DO boost them. It is these pioneers the rest of us get to thank for the issues they deal with and potential catastrophic trouble that can come their way. The rest of us just play "wait and see". Sometimes, waiting is the best solution.

Today, I received an interesting cell-phone image with a story from another enthusiast. The image is below, the story follows.

The picture above is what's left of a VQ37 rod and piston from a 2008 G37 coupe which had the Stillen supercharger kit. From what I have been told the kit was installed by a certified Infiniti dealership and covered under warranty. In this configuration it was working quite well. Two days before catastrophy the owner had Stillen headers added to the car and was informed there was no need for a tune change. The failure happend when the owner was in 2nd gear and punched it. He had a loss of power, gauges showed nothing, and he looked into the mirror to see oil and peices of transmission littering the middle of the road.

The car is currently back in Infiniti's care while a new block has been ordered. Infiniti and Stillen are looking into the issue to determine a cause if possible. Based on Stillen's and Infiniti's standing in the community we know the owner will be taken care of.

Thanks to the owner for possibly "taking one for the community". I'll update as more information is availble.

I didn't realize that the Stillen Supercharger doesn't void the warranty. Does this also apply for the 370Z? I'm very interested in seeing how the warranty process plays out.

weiboy718 03-21-2011 08:42 PM

to my understanding the dealer may not void his warranty but Infiniti itself will not honor that warranty to him unless his dealer is willing to cut corners imo

flashburn 03-21-2011 08:45 PM

That doesn't make sense, what does "cut corners" mean? Sounds pretty sketchy.

Good thing you aren't trying to sell your stillen kit now. Lol. This reconfirms my decision to dump this kit and go gtm

No need for a tune change? What the hell?

Whoever told him that needs to be shot!

Red__Zed 03-21-2011 09:05 PM
