Quaife or Carbonetic LSD

So after deciding on changing my differential

I researched some of the threads on forum and I saw that these two are the most common between the track guys

I use my Z in drag strips, tracks and I want something that won't turn me down when I start to drift. it's also my only car so it's a daily use. so I guess the 2way is the best choice for that use ( give me your opinions on that please )

I heard that aftermarket differentials make some sounds !! what kinda sound is it !? is it noisy, will it get on my nerves specially when it's a daily use !? and which one makes less sounds !?

When it come to install, is there any modifications required !? I have a touring w/out the sport pkg.

although all of them are HD which one tends to last longer

Please vote and share your experience.

Oh i almost forgot is there a NEGATIVE side of getting an aftermarket differential !?

I voted none of the above. I would get a Cusco RS if it were me. Quaife is not a clutch type of LSD and from what I remember when I was looking at LSD's the Cusco was cheaper than the Carbonetics non carbon LSD. The Carbonetics carbon LSD needs fluid changed a lot more often than a regular LSD which is why I wouldn't go with that 1.

^^This is just what I would do. I am sure others would go a different route for different reasons.

How much is the Cusco !? is it a bolt on install !?

What are the usual prices for these diff's?

biggersNISMO 03-10-2011 09:21 PM

Adam at Z1 Performance is the guy to talk to. He'll hook you up with the Quaife. It's the most popular on the 350z platform hands down. It cost 1k, depending where you buy. But don't gimp out on the Quaife because of the price. Remember, you usually get what you pay for. If you look at the 350z forums, you'll see what I'm talking about sir.

1slow370 03-11-2011 04:41 AM

Thank you sir for clarifying my statement :)

If you have a base and need street drive-ability get the Quaife, it's going to be the most livable and the quietest.

If you have a sport and are most interested in track get the Carbonetics. Yes, you have the change the fluid pretty regularly but it is going to lock harder. To me changing the diff fluid isn't any harder than changing the engine oil, I do both after a 2-day track weekend. The Carbonetics is going to be a little noisier than the the Quaife as the clutches engage/disengage.

For regular open track 1.5 way is going to be preferred, but if you are seriously going to drift this car (I wouldn't if this was my only car) then 2-way is preferred for that sport but you can get away with a 1.5 way.

Clutch based differentials are going to be slightly noisier, you get a small clunk as the clutch plates come together. It's not that bad, not obnoxious to any extent.

The 1.5 and the 2 way lock the same under acceleration, the difference between the two is under deceleration. The 2-way will lock up under deceleration where as the 1.5 way only has partial lock under deceleration.

1.5 is the way to go in my opinion. Obviously there are some gentlemen that will have a different opinion, and that is fine .

My car is set up for mostly a weekend street warrior and mild drift use. :driving: That's why I prefer the 1.5 way. I get the best of both worlds. :happydance:

I'm getting the OS Giken next month. Can't wait. This is a must for me. It will be my best mod to date. Plus I only have a base model.

ok now my question is will the Quaife have a better lock than the Carbonetic ? cause I decided to go with the Carbonetic for a the less noise

I think you got it backwards?

The Carbonetic will have a tighter lock up.
The Quaife will be a little quieter and have less maintenance.
