STAGE 2 GTM supercharger BOV OPTIONS
I'm looking to change out the turbosmart BOV due to constant issues with sticking... I had seen a few threads on switching to the 50mm tial BOV which requires adding a different flange to the pipe. The tial QRJ comes in a 38mm size and should be a direct fit. How loud is the qrj tial vs the 50 mm ... has any one had any experience with it?
|
On the Air to Air setup the QRJ sounds a gazillion times better than the turbosmart. In fact I dont even sell the kit without the Tial anymore so guys arent disappointed in their system after they go Air to Air. The Tial is probably 3X louder because it actually gets the air out when it needs to instead of "trying" to.
Turbosmart = Wheezing Grandpa Tial QRJ = Fighter Jet |
I have GTM stage 1.5 with TIAL BOV and its sounds pretty awesome, on high revs it is a fighter jet.
|
Have you attempted to clean/lube the TS BOV? (Just thinking out loud, haven't done this on my setup yet... but I have TS BOV's)
|
Both me and kentomo280z are running the tial qrj bpv on our gtm sc kits with the 1.5psi spring. it flows twice as much air and doesn't flutter like the turbosmart bpv. you just have to remove the old flange and get the tial one welded on. it cost me 30 bucks at local shop.

The qrj comes in a 38mm flange.was trying to find a direct fit without having to rework the pipe with a 50mm. I did see the vids of the tial 50mm swap and it sounded great that's why I was asking about the qrj size.....http://www.jegs.com/p/TiAL-Sport/TiA...39373/10002/-1 I did speak with a very reputable guy at Z1 and he said he seen a lot of guys use a 38mm wastegate with a lighter spring cause it had a larger opening than a 38mm bov |

Curious about a couple of things: 1) How old is it? how many miles? 2) Did you contact TS and if so, did they give any options? I probably have the same valves so just looking for data... |

unfortunately the 38mm qrj bpv wont fit the 38mm turbosmart flange supplied with the kit, i initially thought the same, but the design of the lip where the valve sits is different for the tial and wont seal properly. i wouldnt recommend a bov like the tial q series because there is no way filter the air as its being sucked into the engine under vaccum, this could lead to dirt and debris being sucked into the intercooler pipe. |

Called turbosmart.not much help they warranty is 1year ....not much they could do since the piston and housing are matched together so replacing the piston wasn't recommended |

Well that sucks about the flanges ...and the bov is blowing air out while at idle with the super charger don't think there is anything getting sucked in. |
Not sure if this is what you are after, but just saw it pop up in the classifieds:

The 50 mm was way loud. I only used it for a very short period of time. The QRJ is what I have ended up using full time. It was a little loud so I added a filter and wrapped the filter with foam and that setup works very well. It has never stuck and would highly recommend. Does not flutter for me either, where as all the others have. I've also used the Synapse valves, both old style & new. I've spent a small fortune trying to fix the flutter issue. QRJ ftw!! Stage 1.5 setup. |

I actually had a 2nd BOV pipe made as I kept having new flanges welded on. .I'm sure that it did flutter , otherwise I probably would have put a filter on it to quiet it down. The qrj works quite well.. |
I have my gtm supercharger 1.5 kit for 3 years and after constant issues with sticking and leaking turbosmart bpv I switched to qrj early this year. Zero flutter, hasn't showed any signs of sticking or leaking. I am very happy customer. There was nothing worse than stock closed valve during your track/autocross day. I would take it apart and clean the turbosmart at least once a month but extreme temps during track days or autocross would get the valve stick at any time. I'd recommend to bite the bullet and get the qrj.

New BOV is here hoping to have it installed by Saturday

How did you end up liking the new bov? I'm looking to get either a q or a qrj to replace my old turbosmart

I love 50mm tial....but like everyone says ...it is very loud and you will be heard from a long way. If I had to choose again ..I would still get the 50mm lol . Sounds awesome. |
Haha sick, that is tempting. It runs fine though? My sticky old Turbosmart sounds fine I just hate taking my bumper off to clean it every 3 months!

Thats awesome man I'm glad you're loving it. I'm think I'm gonna go for the 50mm as well, if I have to weld the pipe anyways may as well go big!
|
I have the Stage 2 GTM SC as well, and I'm also getting annoyed at always having to service the TS BOV. So to understand this right, you need to have a shop cut off the old flange and weld on the new flange? Same location?

Thanks guys. Any reason you can't just use something like a silicone coupler and clamps to connect the Tial onto the TS flange? Easier than cutting and welding? Screw this onto the intake side of the QRJ and hose clamp it to the existing TS flange? https://www.jegs.com/i/TiAL-Sport/768/004492/10002/-1
Kinda like this picture? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...06b8e7a642.jpg Also, since we're venting to atmosphere, I supposed I'd need something like this on the outlet side? https://www.jegs.com/i/TiAL-Sport/768/004806/10002/-1 |

I mean I'd just connect it with a short tube so that the overall length is close to what it currently is. Maybe cut the tube to 2" or so. But you think the tube won't hold up to heat and pressure if I made it short? I figure the IC piping is connected by silicone couplers....

As long as it doesn't leak!
|
Got grinder...?
|
OK guys, got it mounted back up, started up the engine and the valve opens up and stays open at idle.... Sigh. This is the 1.5 lb spring.... Turn off the engine, closes back up again.. What is going on....
EDIT : just read on a supercharger, the valve SHOULD be open, so I guess everything is probably OK then? Man it's loud, at least with the bumper off and in my garage, it's loud haha Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk |

Man it's loud, at least with the bumper off and in my garage, it's loud haha It’s supposed to be open at idle ....and close when you hit the pedal ...open when pedal is lifted ...I did change spring out to the 5 lbs spring with no issue.....and yes loud ...even with bumper on lol |
On cold engine mine stays open till like 3rd gear or if i let the car warm up for like 2mins...vacuum leak?
|
OK finally took her out. You guys aren't kidding - Tial QRJ sounds SO much better than the Turbosmart hahaha
It just opens and closes so much quicker and responsively too vs the Turbosmart. I did stay open at idle, but it seemed to shut, or perhaps partial open while idling, once the car warmed up, so I think it's good to go lol Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk |
