SuperCharger Install Prices

So i was at my local performance shop today, the owners a good friend of mind so i got a legit answer here, 1950-2700

LiquidZ 12-15-2009 04:03 PM

Is that with a tune? Is that for a centrifugal blower, too?

I might be way off, but to me, that seems a little too high for just an install.

roplusbee 12-15-2009 04:10 PM

I hope that is with tuning. Seems as though that is a lot of hours labor (assuming that they get $95-115/hr).

Snakes709 12-15-2009 04:13 PM

yea thats abit high...as long as the engine doesnt HAVE to be pulled, me and my buddies can do it at the base for the price of a few beers.

Togo 12-15-2009 04:15 PM

That pricing seems more in line with 20-27 hours of labor which seem way above what a SC takes. I thought a SC could be installed in 12 hours or less?

JB-370z 12-15-2009 06:00 PM

Wow! 950-1200 is more like it! Does that include a pot of gold???

biggersNISMO 12-15-2009 06:05 PM

anything over 2k is a little steep for a S/C install in my opinion.
my car guy quoted me $1,800. I've been doing business with him for a while, but even if i was a new customer, he would not charge me anything over $2,100

JB-370z 12-15-2009 06:28 PM

Still way to high but thats my opp.

This is a bit more accurate.

Depending on the kit, we charge anywhere from 8-12 hours of labor and our rate is $99.00/hour.

It also depends on if that price includes tuning. If he was adding tuning with that price then the original (lower) price seems a bit more realistic.

roplusbee 12-15-2009 07:14 PM

I did not do the math on the price vs labor hours, but I would think that it was because of tuning that a shop or mechanic would charge so much.

I remember taking my S13 to a shop in Naples, ITALY and the guy wanted like 300 Euro just to start. He had the only dyno around in the area, so I guess you gotta pay to play. I miss that CA18DET.

Zsteve 12-15-2009 07:14 PM

So is tuning a must or is it just more for fine tuning?

If Stillen releases their kit with a handheld tuner, the tuner will get your car running safely. You should be fine to go from there. It's at the dyno where a car can specifically be tuned to get some monster gains.

Kyle@STILLEN 12-15-2009 07:30 PM

pre-tuned supercharger systems are 95% perfect. The only "missing" piece is for the guy going for the all out power on their particular vehicle. For most people, a generic tune will suffice. Others may want something specific to their car.

The other thing that we're learning during our tuning is that with our new hand held tuner's we will be able to dial a car in to basically 99% for safety, reliability, and great power increase. If someone wants to take it to the edge then they can get a custom tune done for sure.

With that being said though. You want to be sure who you trust with your car. I have seen so called "reputable shops" blow up engines on the dyno during the tuning process. I will never forget one of those shops claim to fame. "We made more power on 7 cylinders than you did with 8." Made me LMAO!!! A lot goes into tuning, and tuning on a naturally aspirated car vs. a forced induction car is TOTALLY different. If someone doesn't know what they're doing, they can melt down an engine quickly!!!

That caught my eye.

For every one- yes for centriphical and that includes tune and all notice i said around there so it could be a little less, shops do it differently some do it from the base some pull the motor all depends thanks for all the great posts. Just tryin to give people an idea

I've installed a couple of vortech systems in Zs and Gs and the Stillen on my own 350Z. Typically its about a 10 hour job. I'm getting ready to install one for a local guy for 500.

feelzpwr91 12-16-2009 11:09 AM

yea it includes tuning

Self Install

I am not a an automotive mechanic but I do have an innate ability to fix most anything. I have turned wrenches since I was 16 and rebuilt the engine and transmission in my GT mustang at the age of 17 plus helped a friend do an engine swap and rebuild. I have pretty much always done my own automotive work and i feel I am pretty competent in what I am doing as long as I have the tools for the job.

If a person has a garage and is equipped with a good set of tools and has a background such as stated above have much difficulty installing a supercharger themselves?

I see a real benifit to installing it yourself so you understand exactly how it works and where everthing is for troubleshooting issues that may arise down the road rather than being dependant on the shop that installed it. I am a senior systems engineer by trade so troubleshooting issues no matter what it is, is second nature to me.

Rob@Altered 01-11-2010 08:36 AM

Are there any other mods going into it? Maybe an upgraded fuel system, or an oil cooler it, could be involved with the quote?

Zguy 01-30-2010 08:30 PM

I installed my vortech, injectors, utec, walbro and did my swirl jet mod in about 3 hours.... I would NEVER pay someone to install anything in my car but a motor if even that.... 80-100 bucks an hour just isnt worth it to me. My greenbacks dont come so easy so I have to place them strategically. :)

m4a1mustang 01-30-2010 08:34 PM

SC install is definitely doable if you are at all mechanically inclined. Most anyone can do mechanical work, it's just that not that many people trust themselves to do so.
