Comp turbo install Error

****** Please read post #79 and #82 for explanation for how this was a install error and not a manufacturer defect*******

So for the last 3 months I have been meticulously installing a Boosted Performance turbo kit for my HR.....works been really busy so I've been tackling the install by myself when I have time. Prior to doing the turbo install I dropped the transmission and put in a Southbend stage 3 daily clutch and DXD flywheel, Zspeed HD slave, wilwood MC ect ect.

Today I finally got to the point where I could actually fire her up and drive it just a little bit to check for leaks.......................after letting it idle for 5 mins I decided to go around the block lightly....I only had the base map flashed provided by Sasha and Vince at RT tuning so I kept it light footed.....................

This is where I get really sad now, I made it only about an eighth mile from my house and I started to notice a kind of whirling or howling sound coming from the Comp Turbo (oil-less provided with the boosted performance turbo kit) I turned around and parked it back in the garage and started checking everything out.

I noticed when I removed the air filter for the turbo it appears that the impeller blades have somehow made a grove into the turbo inlet housing....I'll upload pics tomorrow.

What would of caused this so fast? not even getting on it....I assume all the metal shards from the impeller and inlet housing are now located in my engine now......

Sorry for the long post..............just utterly disappointed....didn't now what else to do....its not even about the money.....just all the time I have spent with all this......I guess literally everyone was right about my 350z and what a waste of time and money it would be doing all this to it.

My moping session is over ill get pics soon FML.

wow,,,did you loosen any clamps on turbo to clock it/turn it for piping alignment?
i'm not familiar with that turbo...as you stated oil-less.

jchammond 08-06-2017 03:37 AM

1st Turbo i've ever seen that uses high temp grease for the bearings...I'm sure it had to come pre-lubed.

knuckles899 08-06-2017 04:05 AM

Yeah, it comes pre-greased......i verified by calling CompTurbo a couple months ago.

I loosened the housing to spin it slightly but that is pretty common in order to align/clock the turbo.

That's crazy; hopefully it didn't force particles into your engine; your intercooler may have caught them.
Pics look as though it's coming apart-wish you Luck on some warranty.
That really sux; as I can relate by performing all of my wrench turning.

Hmmm that makes me wanna check mine now ....I did noticed it howl some and heard some strange noises that I have been looking for...but most have been exhaust vibration ..haven't removed the turbo tho I have about 50 miles on it now.....just making a observation from the pics ...it kinda looks like something mine have been sucked in damaging the blade

Our first Comp Turbo review, lovely. And this is a 350z? Still wondering where all the 370z guys are that have this turbo. I haven't seen anything from them, and it's been awhile since they were sold.

Thank you Knuckles for giving us your experience

Yeah 08 350z HR. At this point I feel as if I've been sold a vat of snake oil from Comp Turbo......

I'm curious on Sasha's opinion about this.....since he backed supplying Comp oil-less turbos with his kit.

Elmo370z 08-06-2017 12:29 PM

Damnit

Elmo370z 08-06-2017 12:30 PM

Normal for a single exit exhaust.
