Alright guys, I'm soaking all of this up. Thanks for your responses. So, if I want to be "safe" without building the motor my pre-install maintenance checklist should be as follows:
Compression/Leak-down test Timing cover gaskets Timing chain tensioner (?) Pulleys Intake manifold cleaning (upper & lower) Oil analysis Anything more? Anything less? |
Add in anything that should be done at or around that mileage anyway. Deferred maintenance will kick your *** on a build like this.

Having recently been through this it was a bit over 5k. It got the job done but knowing what I know now I wasn't far off a built longblock. I paid 3k for an extremely low mileage 2015 motor and around 1500 for the removal and replacement of the motor. I had to do the turbo on my own. Now I'm looking at an IPP stage 2 longblock, bigger injectors, and upgraded MAFS which will be roughly 10k which depends on me convincing my engine guy to do the install again. I would've gladly gave up the extra 5k had I known what I know now to be in the 600+ club without sweating every time it spools.

Ah yes touché, built once and done is of course more ideal. |
