When it happened, got the CEL flashing at me every time I tried to rev and it struggled... but strangely it didn't generate a code.

Well here's the very important thing. Prior to this happening I was struggling to diagnose weird AFRs on Bank 2, the same Bank that ended up dedonating that Cat.

Only Bank 2 went. Bank 1 is the 'before' photo.

Turns out my Plenum gasket had developed a very small tear, for the Cylinder 6 runner and was the cause of my whacky AFRs.

What I suspect happened was one day while conducting some 'tests' and revving it out, right after I hit redline (and rev limiter) I heard a small pop followed by brown smoke bellowing out my exhaust, which I think I mentioned already in OP. Had I not had the AFR issues on that Bank 2, probably wouldn't have happened I think. Could have been a little bit too much fuel was dumped, and ignited in the Headers and blew out the Cat? I dunno, but it seems kinda plausible.

Photo of the tear I'm talking about:

I'm still running stock cats on my gtm stage 2 ..23k seems to be ok so far...not sure if I wanna change it up and lose low end TQ...super chargers need all the TQ the can get

MoulaZ 04-30-2017 06:03 PM

Don't know about the GTM kit but I felt no loss of power going from stock Cats to TPs, and more power at top end. There's a fine line between beneficial scavenging effect and straight up restriction. Those stock Cats seem very restrictive to me at least.

I keep the stock cats till they blow lol I have another set of stocks on standby a small well so I'm covered for a while at least

I wouldnt want to risk doing this. They could blow in a way they plug up the exhaust so bad that they damage the internals of your engine.

Pretty much.

When mine exploded, I pretty much shat a brick, thought 'it was over, engine exploded and the 370Z ride was over'. It was NOT a plesant experience, no idea why one would want to risk re-living that, not to mention the potential as TG said, that it could actually cause some permanent damage.

So is there any general consensus on which CATS are the strongest and most reliable for an FI build regardsless of how they sound?

TopgunZ 05-05-2017 07:38 AM

Ive always heard Mil-spec are hard to beat. I have zero data to back that up though.

From what I recall, that's what Fast Intentions uses in their catted turbo exhausts.

shadow85 05-07-2017 07:24 PM

Does anyone here have mill spec cats on their Foced Induction build?

If you're talking universal style Cats... Mil-Spec is more widely available in the US, Magnaflow are probably the best you can get in Australia.

If you're talking typical 'HFCs' in the stock location, there's a stack off-the-shelf options, though I doubt the success you'll have with them.

It's more to do with Cat location, not brand or type, in my opinion

In the Z32, Cat location was mid-system and there are plenty of F.I. Z32s with far more power than us with this setup, unlike the Z34 where Nissan decided to have the Cats up front, at the beginning of the system right after the headers.

:iagree:

FI put the cats much further downstream on my exhaust, and there haven't been any issues.

TBatt 05-08-2017 08:22 AM

I'm looking at going with the Fast Intentions Resonated High Flow Cats. I'm not sure what they use as the cat (Mil Spec?) but I trust them to make the right choice.

Planning on ordering them very soon. Anyone got any experience with these?

Wouldn't you be better off using TPs in the normal location and having FI put cats in the lead pipes for the exhaust? It's how they do it on their 3" turbo exhaust if you want cats. Moving the cats downstream will extend their life greatly.

TBatt 05-08-2017 08:32 AM

I'm not sure which is better, that is why I will give Tony a call today and see what he says. I already have their TDX exhaust system.

TBatt 05-08-2017 12:34 PM

Just got off the phone with FI and will be going with resonated Test Pipes and the Mil-Spec Cats installed in the front pipes. 6-8 week lead time though........

shadow85 05-08-2017 05:48 PM

Tbatt, you said you already have the FI TDX system. How are you getting the TP and Mil spec cats installed? Are you taking the exhaust back to them and are they going to install?

Reason I ask, is I have already ordered my FI Turbo TDX without built in cats. But now I want to get cats installed on them, but I will probably have to do it after I get the FI exhaust as I think they are close to finishing my order. Has been 12 weeks now.

Billyt858 05-09-2017 11:54 AM

Does anyone know if a genuine 2015 370z catalytic converter will fit on a 2010 year model?

I'm buying a new lead pipe section with the cats already installed. They will be shipping me the TPs and new lead pipe for me to install.

If they have not started on your system yet, give them a call and let them know what you need. FI is one of the friendliest companies I have ever worked with.

They have definitly started my exhaust, it has been already 12 weeks since my order. Infact I just spoke to my supplier, and they said my exhaust will be finished by late May early June. I may still have time to ask FI to have the Milspec cats installed. Tempted to give them a buzz and ask to modify my order to include the cats.

I think I will need them because I will need to pass emission testings here. I don't think the CAT delete downpipes from AAM TT kit would pass the emissions testing here.

Has anyone tried gutting the stock cats?

Motordyne came out today. :(

Invidia Q300 went in. It's definitely quieter, more what I wanted. Videos were taken, I'll get around to uploading them later.

For now though, some photos.

Video up. This is without the Supercharger in, plus after the Magnaflow Cats went in. I'll get another one up shortly of the new Invidia Q300 CBE. Much quieter, but drones like a BITCH.
