Aren't third brake lights now mandated under federal regs?

I just did a quick search. This is from Yahoo Answers, which is obviously not the be all and end all authority on legal questions, but it'd still probably be wise to research the legal aspect of this before doing it.

I <3 our brakelights!

you have to take off the inner hatch molding, then there is, I think, just one 10mm bolt that secures it, in the center of the light. There are prongs all around it though, and when I took mine out to have it tinted, the lens came off and I spent about 30 mintues wrestling with the rest of it, ttrying to get it out.

good luck!

Just leave the safe, third brake light alone please.

i think he wants to temporarily remove it to get rid of the protective wrapping left by the dealer...

it really looks odd when you get the tails painted and not the 3rd light.. I know, we forgot about it on mine the first time.

Well, back to the OP's question of how to do it. There's a diagram in the service manual. OP, try checking there next time. I know you're relatively new to this forum, so you may not be aware that the entire service manual is available for download in the Manuals section.

This is from page EXL-169 of the SM.

I'm pretty sure the DOT regulation is if there is a light, it must remain, and it must work.

Even on semi's where they added a bunch of lights...all of them have to work or it's a fixit-ticket.

kenchan 09-28-2009 11:09 AM

nice job, semtex. :)

MoChu 09-28-2009 12:22 PM

Thanks for the help guys! I need to remove it to get it tint.

kannibul 09-28-2009 02:16 PM

I know people like changing the looks of their cars, but, I can't stand tinted taillights on street vehicles.

I can't tell you how many times I have nearly rear ended some jerk-off in a truck with their tail lights tinted and in stop and go traffic....

I'm surprised it's not insta-ticket.

just got mine out tonight... this thing was an *** to take out seriously
