Flashing third brake light MOD

I was behind a car coming to a stop light and his 3rd brake light flashed when he applied the brakes, I googled it and found a small module that you splice into the wiring. I would like to do this mod but don't know how to remove the covering on the hatch to get to the light. Any suggestions or how to do's?

Yeah but they get you attention don't they ;)

I did a flasher with delay on my fog light. It will only flash when the brakes have not been pressed in over 8 seconds, so in those stop & go situations your not annoying the people behind as much

I caught the line at the top of the brake pedal. Wired in a 10hz module that flashes 10x per sec for 2 sec. Makes them all flash. Makes a big difference in people tailgating you. I will also have the JDM third installed this week and that one will do the same.

 one light, yeah, all of them not only stupid but begging to get rear ended since those behind you have no clue if you are actually braking or not.

Agreed.

Also, I found it made it more difficult for me to determine whether the car in front of me was coming to a quick or gentle stop. All it did was motivate me to get in another lane entirely rather than be surprised, or have to maintain an absurdly far distance back.

Side note: I also dislike the "landing strip" turn signals on new Mustangs :shakes head:

That's because no one can figure out what you are doing... you are probably more likely to get rear ended by a confused driver than an aggressive one.

Even one flashing, out of sync with the others, is more confusing than informative.

I have to agree. BMW once had the idea that the light would flash only if the brakes were pressed hard, like a panic stop. I don't mind that.

I was behind a person on the freeway whose lights would flash whenever the brakes were applied. I was quite displeased with this vehicle by the time we were through the traffic. It was annoying as hell!

RyanWest 07-06-2014 05:13 PM

I think this mod is only cool for reversing.

shika805 07-06-2014 05:55 PM

fog light yes! third brake light no... your third break light is the only light that others can tell if your braking. If it was flashing it would be difficult to tell if your were just "tapping" the brake or having it fully depressed.

Just add a rear fog light flasher and call it a day.

tonybell_57 07-06-2014 06:15 PM

I used to have one on my S2000 after getting smacked in the rear while sitting at a traffic light. I got one for my Z, but I haven't installed it yet. Mine flashes 6 times then goes solid. I have gotten a few compliments from people behind me regarding it. They like that they know if I just stopped or have been stopped for a while. Never got hit in the rear again after installing it.

That's the point. It's to get you to pay attention to the car in front of you.

It goes solid after 2 secs. By the time you read the first sentence of this reply it would be solid.

unless you are driving a shifter cart you can see over and around the Z as low as the roof line is. Turn signals indicate I a turning so have no fear you will know where I am turning in at. As for not wanting to be behind a car doing that, exactly what I would prefer.

I have gotten numerous people pull up next to me wanting to know how did that or if it comes like that. Say that they really like and it gets their attention. Almost every other crotch rocket has this done from what I have seen up here.

Exactly.

You cant tell if they are in sync or out, 20 flashes in 2 secs is faster than your eyes can count or tell.

RyanWest 07-06-2014 10:37 PM

Does anyone have a DIY for the reversing fog light blinking mod?

Flashing serves my purpose. I have good intentions and that is for people to pay attention, annoying or otherwise.

equalme 07-07-2014 01:28 AM

I'm not a big fan of flashing third brake light...anything around eye-level would be super annoying and distracting to others. IMO if you must have blinking then get the fog light.

Yeah.. but the roads are public and the lanes are limited.

My only experience with this was an elderly gentleman in a new stingray. His brake lights were the only intermittent lights I encountered, as he seemed un-interesrted in using his turn signals before changing lanes (although I am in FL, and this is an especially big issue among FL drivers...).

I propose one thought to reflect upon:

If you are a in a cool car AND a safe driver, other cars will either be pleased to be behind you or drive as normal.

If drivers strive to NOT be behind you, which is not always easily achieved, it's improbable that they are doing so for a reason other than irritation...

Is that the aim of motorists navigating driving public roads: To irritate other drivers so much that they avoid being near you like a plague victim with spurting pustules? :icon14:

If the answer is: Whatever it takes to keep people away from me, so I can get from point A to B undisturbed, while I feel your pain, I would caution you that the specific chosen solution may be contributing to the general, and seemingly unavoidable, problem...

( Click to show/hide )
see further certain views vociferously expoused on the merits of powerful, easily concealable, repeating firearms and personal safety... a noble, and well-meaning idea that is empirically found to contribute to undesirable outcomes far more than desirable ones...

?!?! your guys 370z didn't came with this stock??????
mines did. I bought my 2012 370Z brand new in 1st of April.
My 3rd brake light flashes 5 times then solid. I have notice I am the only one in my area with this stock.
Here is a link to the video that I made awhile back.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=KFL8b8Ae3hs
( and FYI I changed the evo-r fog to flash only in reverse. ) lol it looked like a light show with two flashes.. -___-

axmea? 07-07-2014 05:18 PM

I have a correction, I was speaking of the fog light not the 3rd BL. Sorry.
As for the 3rd, if I were to do it, 2 flashes would be my max.

As I'm fond of saying "If they aren't looking, they won't see you"....doesn't matter if you're the side of a building, a pedestrian, or a car / motorcycle with 1000 flashing lights. They're either putting on makeup, gnawing on a leg bone, or slapping kids, staring at the legs on the sidewalk, picking something up out of floorboard they dropped, looking at what they just pulled out of their nose, or texting, doesn't matter, the end result is they smack your ***.

Huh. News to me. Maybe an option on either the nav or mini-carputer on the left-most side of the cluster?

Or did you buy it used?

Limeybastard 07-07-2014 11:26 PM

Doubt it came stock, mines a 2014 base sport and it does not flash as far as I am aware.

Back on topic, I am torn as whether do this mod on my third brake light. I already have the time delayed unit which I pulled from another car that was traded in. Its a matter of just pulling out the plastics and tapping the module in for me. However, still undecided.

Personally the few cars that I have seen with the flashing third brake,it does make you notice them ever so more than the other third brake lights, so I believe it has safety advantages.

Zteven 07-08-2014 03:55 AM

The pulsing third brake light under the tail is an option offered by nissan starting 2013 meant to deter rear end collisions, I didn't think of it but when I bought the jdm fog light my shop gave me the idea to incorporate the flashing relay for the fog as well and I get nothing but compliments. My brother bought a 2014 and didn't have the pulsing brake light so that's when I found out it's not standard

I could see this being useful if it pulsed for sudden stops (e.g., decelerating 10 mph per sec), but in bumper to bumper traffic, I see this as being as much a potential irritation as a boon.

wouldnt know, im not behind my own car when I apply the breaks. And everyone in my area that has a newer Z seems to be an ***. Wave and they just rev, stare straight ahead, or do a ricer flyby :shakes head: . So ive never been behind one long enough to see if the brake lights flash. Pretty sure they dont on any year.

kentstuh 07-09-2014 01:25 AM

LOL I am serious haha I bought my 2012 Z brand new from west covina nissan with only 15 miles on it. It came stock with the flash. look at my video link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=KFL8b8Ae3hs

If you go to nissan website to build a 370z there are no flashing brake light options.

That particular dealer added that part but its not related to Nissan.
