powercoat door handles?

Can this be done, or only paint. Asking for my friend bc his painted ones keep getting chipped. If it is PC, will it function correctly? thank you in advance :tiphat:

I believe the handles are plastic and can not be powder coated... someone correct me if I am wrong.

I'm still waiting for a guinea pig willing to risk a handle. I'll powdercoat them for free, and they may hold up to the heat, but if they don't that is the risk you take for being the first.

Wow

I believe most plastics are gonna melt between 100C and 200C so i wouldn't risk it. I think powdercoating hits around 200C.

Why not paint anyways? Its super easy and looks great. Its so small you can do a great job with a rattle can.

Mike 04-04-2014 07:16 PM

correct. minimum temp I can cure at is 380, or 193 C. It depends on the plastic formulation.

Corvette wheel center caps, which are marked PPA+PA (I think), don't melt at 380. Nissan centercaps which are ABS melt at about 200F, Honda ones melt at 180. Corvette engine covers can handle the heat, Nissan melt at 220. LS plastic manifolds, as well as FAST composite manifolds can be powdercoated and handle the heat. Its all trial and error

Someone should take the handles of a wrecked Z and send them to Mike for a science project.

Mike is right, 380-400 degrees for 15-20 minutes will melt them or at least deform them. Plus powder does not work on plastic anyways. It can only be molded into the process.

second part is not quite correct. I've been powdercoating plastic that can handle the temperature for years. I have developed my own process of doing it.
