OP, your topic got me thinking - and I'm not trying to be a smartass or a **** - but how often do cars get broken into in your area? The reason I ask is because I've left my car in some really sketchy areas in NYC, and never really had any issues (though obviously, anecdotal stories don't equal substantive evidence). I actually didn't have wheel locks on my car for the first three or so years when I lived in West Harlem, and I also routinely travel into northern Harlem for work (pic of area below).

Cars never get broken into here. We had a crime wave in 2004 - someone put a quarter in the macine and stole all the newspapers.

But If I can lock the center console I can have peace of mind.

Yes I can relocate stuff to the glove box but it is a PITA. What started as an ipod is now ipod, usb drives, charger, a spare $20 bill, reading glasses, business cards, and about $4 in loose change. And when I take out one thing it all shifts.

Ever go out and forget to lock the front door? Do you worry all day? Is everything okay when you get home? Same thing.

No, I can't say that I do.

I valeted a car once and the dude kept a loaded 9mm inside the driver door insert in plain sight. I gawked at it for awhile and decided that I ain't touchin nothin in that car. Good times.

LMFAO

Are you serious. LOL peace of mind.
Not a high crime rate and it takes this to give you peace of mind.

And no I don't worry all day because everything I have is insured everything digital is backed up by carbonite and all images are scanned and backed up and I am not sentimental about my old baseball caps.

Holy cow you are one paranoid individual.
Sorry this thread is just silly now.

Mmm, I work in the security field (though more for 'asymmetric' threats), so I can understand and appreciate the need for "peace of mind." But I also agree with the others here that the cost might be too high in comparison to the alternatives, and ultimately, it may prove to be too obtrusive. But hey, if it makes you happy, more power to you to getting it done.

This is actually a fairly commonplace concern, even if you don't think it's legitimate (from a realist standpoint, people will always seek additional layers of security, however redundant) - but, if you want truly paranoid, look at the doomsday bunker folks...

Things are safe where I live but I tend to DRIVE my car to other locations which may or may not be as safe. You have no room to talk unless you never lock your house or car.

exsanity 01-08-2014 08:16 PM

I think I left my door unlocked..

I haven't been home in 6 months.. :ugh:

At Firestone a mechanic took a quarter from the center console for a Coke but replaced it before the car was done. I noticed because I put the quarter aside because it was silver and the replacement as not. That's when he admitted taking the quarter for a Coke. He was fired on the spot.

keep in mind now Feds regard anything with a lock as a drug compartment. Of course, interpretation is all their perogative.
