7 dollar mod no joke....!!!!
hey everyone so ive been seeing all these overlays for the rear for the 370z and man i was digging it... but when i went to my local car shop who does graphics and stuff they were charging me 165 to do just my rear... i was like damn... that hurts just for a sticker? i rather just paint it myself... so i went to a vinyl wholesale place and bought me some vinyl and decided to try and do it my self... i spent about 5.50 for a yard of satin black vinyl and 1 some for a squegee... sorry i didnt do any step by step pictures... this was the outcome of my FIRST!!!! attempt....
http://www.the370z.com/members/simot...ucks-vinyl.jpg Guys if you are doubting that you cant do this mod its super easy! no joke i have never worked with vinyl in my life but i was able to make it contour to the curves and stuff of my bumper.. just use a blow dryer to stretch the vinyl and a beer with u lol so u dont get frustrated it took me about 2 hours just to do the rear... and if you guys are worried about the outline of red around the block off plate? dont worry i have the fog lamp already i just didnt put it on yet... haha it should flow once i have the fog on... the reason why i have an outline is cuz i was getting lazy lol tell me wat u guys think though aiight? |
Very noice! The next step is getting your own graphics shop :P
|
Amusingly enough, I kind of like the red outline around the block off plate...nice work.
|
Very nice. Have you ever done window tint or anything like this before?
|
That looks great! I am all for DIYs, and this is an easy one!
I have also applied clear bras myself, and found it easier than most people say it is. Just spray PLENTY of water and soap mixture, and take your time with the squeegie, following a very orderly pattern (from middle to the outside for the hood, for example), and voila, clear bra applied. |
I have done tint before but... lol :wtf2: i sucked at it maybe that was cuz i was still to young and was super duper inpatient.... haha

I like it! I want to try DIY on my car too! I just have to find a vinyl place.
|
Nice job...
|
I always wondered why 'overlays' from various people cost 100+ dollars...
Its just a vinyl sticker. Where exactly would one find a vinyl wholesaler? Was this a local store or something that can be ordered online. |
Looks great, when can you do mine? Ha ha.
|
Man, that looks GOOD! Props...

Vinyl can be bought on Ebay. If you have to purchase an entire roll. One person can purchase the roll, and part out the roll to other members for a few dollars.
Tubes to fit the vinyl can be bought at any postage facility (UPS, FedEx, USPS) or office store (office depot, office max, staples, even Walgreens sometimes) And shipping would cost a few bucks as well. So if one person decides to buy 20 yards. 1 yard should be enough for each person. Just an idea. |
Very good job, goes to show how much people get ripped off when having things like this done by somone else.
|
hmm that looks really good does vinyl ruin the paint at all? have you thought about applying vinyl to the roof too? and what do you guys think of carbonfiber vinyl?
|
As long as you take off the vinyl under a year its harmless... the paint is stil shiny as it was b4 u put the vinyl on... but in this case just reapply it and u wont have problems at all...

I am curious to know, has the heat of the exhaust, discolored, or made the vinyl bubble?
