I haven't seen any black cars with the defect yet, not sure why.

chris410 08-09-2009 06:02 PM

I have a PW and have this, my guess is that it happened when the bumper was put on the car. I'm going to take it to the dealer and have them touch it up. Very small imperfection however, my concern is that it may expand. Seems more like an installation issue rather than defective paint by the way the paint has peeled.

Aside from that, the rest of the car is perfect. I'm having the clear-bra put on next month as well.

Benibiker 08-10-2009 12:50 AM

Looks like this might be a pressure point where the bumper meets the fender and the vibration while driving is chipping the paint off.

jose_o9 08-11-2009 12:15 AM

THe dealership is going to paint the front bumper. I got it approved they had to get the district manager involved.

kailua 08-11-2009 01:41 AM

Mine did the same. Had the dealer touch up the driver's side.

Paint Defects...370z RED

So, I am so comforted to know I'm not the only one having problems with my BRAND NEW RED 370Z!

I bought it in June and immediately noticed little purple/pearlish spots all over the car. You couldn't feel them or get them off and the dealer tried to do some stuff and had no success. Nissan actually had someone from HQ come in and look at this car and they said "get her a new one". So after a long process of trying to find my exact same car...I got a new one. I picked it up last week...and it has the same purple spots (not as many, but still...). They had called it "fallout" as a result of pollution...the first car came from S. Texas. But this second car came from S. Dakota...so I doubt it's pollution!

I took it to my paint guy and he said it looks like moisture got on the car before they did the clear coat and is trapped in between the red and clear. So, his concern was that it may try to come out someday and mess up the paint.

I took the car back today and told them I wasn't satisfied and just don't even want it anymore. It is rediculous to spend this much money on a car and it not be PERFECT...I'm tired of messing with it. As I was leaving the lot, I stopped at the red (lower end model) they have on display...it has the same crap on it...purple/pearlish spots in the paint....REDICULOUS!!!!

Nissan really needs to check the quality controls on their paint process!!!!

Premo34WV 08-18-2009 03:00 PM

I have noticed a couple spots on my PW that turned a yellowish color after bird sh*t was there for only day or two tops. Im not talking a big pile of it, I mean just a drop. I know bird poo is acidic but damn I never had it actually eat the paint within 48 hrs.

I have the same exact thing on the drivers front bumper, going to the dealer Friday...

Keep us posted man. I live in Houston too, your update will help me in my decision making process. I love to detail ( i am a detailer part time) and use nothing but the best professional products on details, the last thing i want to see in the paint is orange peel or any defects that should've been prevented and corrected before the car left the factory. I don't understand how no one at the Nissan's paint factory hasn't observed these paint conditions at the paint factory, the signs are there without a doubt. I've heard of cars having thin clear coats, but based on the stories i'm hearing about Nissan's paint jobs this has been on going for a while. This has gone on for far too long. I am in love with the 370z, i've followed it since the spy pics first came out, it's still the only car on my list. I'm waiting to see when the overhaul of the paint factory at Nissan will occur, or at least a permanent solution that will bring them up to par with the other car companies that are readily available.

I bought my Magnetic Black 370 back in July. At first I noticed a little bit of orange peel
but didnt make anything of it. Today when I washed it i noticed a raised bump in the paint on the hatch door. It kind of looks like a pimple in the paint. After reading this forum on the issue of the front bumper peeling I was surprised to see that this was also happening to my driverside bumber. Here are the pictures of the bump and peeling.

The bump in your paint is not your paint bubbling up, it's something stuck on it. Probably pitch.

I dont think so. I picked at it and paint came off the top. Im going to take it to a paint shop to have them look at it tomorrow.

Have the shop take a look, but I don't think it would be clear bubbling up. I have never seen or heard of such a thing, and I've been working on paint for many years. But hey there is always a first for everything right.

corbin09 09-08-2009 02:38 PM

The paint on my passanger side fender, no larger than a eraser on a pencil, has started to peel off, in almost a perfect circle. I posted a picture on here, It is obviously the clear coat coming off because the paint underneath it is still there. I took it to the dealership and they told me it was a rock chip. I took it to a reputable detailer in the area and had them asses it, Brought it back to the dealership with the detailers concensus and they told me (again) it was a rock chip and they would do NOTHING about it. If it gets any bigger i will continue to bring it back. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah you were right it was something stuck on the paint. It took them a minute but they took it off...... On the bumber I took it to the Nissan dealership. They agreed the factory paint was peeling off. They took pictures to send in to corporate. In the min time they would touch it up.

I have a magnetic black and while I don't have the defect I will say that this paint belongs on a tonka toy at Wal-Mart. It is crazy how easy it scratches, I'm afraid if I look at the paint funny it will scratch. Is there any easy way to get angel hair scratches out of the clear coat?

A few things to note before hysteria takes over....

- We measured the thickness of the paint on the 370Z. It is well within the reasonable range (5 mil ish IIRC).

- The clear coat on the Z is soft but there are other production vehicles that are softer from the factory. I'm not convinced that soft is bad - it probably is more resiliant to chiping if it has some "give". It does mar easily but it also polishes easily. Its not horrible and its not awesome - its average.

- Uh there is orange peel in pretty much ANY paint from a factory assembled car I've ever seen including my friends $100K + AMG Mercedes. You aren't getting away from orange peel unless its hand painted and sanded between layers.

Yes, bring it to a reputable detailer and have them polish them away. In the industry it's known as micro-marring and it is easily polished away.

Solus 09-09-2009 08:10 AM

I just have orange peel. I absolutely hate it but not really sure how to go get it fixed short of wet sanding which i don't want to do.

Thanks for the info, now the problem is finding someone that actually knows what they are doing to get it done. :shakes head:

Ask a friend or find someone who has had work done by a shop and is very satisfied. Try to find a shop that is not high volume, so your car will receive more care and attention. If you can't find someone who knows of a good shop, go check some out. Look at their work and ask for references. Good luck.

370zproject 09-10-2009 02:36 PM

i just read this thread went looked gah mines doing the same thing on the front drives side at the corner by the wheel where the bumped edge thingy...

chii370 07-30-2010 12:04 AM

same issue

i used to own a 2009 platinum graphite base model 370, it had this issue but only in one spot. I sold it and bought a 2009 solid red 370z nismo. Well just recently i got a flat tire (left rear) and was changing it when i noticed where the rear bumper meets the rear quarter panel there is NO GAP AT ALL. as i walked around the car i noticed that on all four corners of the vehicle it looks as though the paint was smashed together by the cars natural flex and vibration paired with the lack of any visible gap at all caused it to flake off all the way to the bear material. this car has been a nightmare but i still love it, OEM tires for the car are on back order since feb, it has the fabled transmission rattle (as did my old one) and now this paint issue? if it were any other car i would have rammed it into the dealership by now.

DaveyJones 07-31-2010 12:01 AM

I have noticed that my paint looks off at certain angles almost like a diff shade in certain light. I also notice different parts around the car where paint has seemed to come off easier than it should.

PR370z 07-31-2010 02:37 PM

The paint on my 09 PG got easily marked by bird droppings, my car is being repainted completely under warranty because of spots under the clear coat. The body shop told me someone from Dupont was coming to inspect my car due to the terrible condition of the paint. I was also told that some Z's had the bumpers painted once they arrived to the US from Japan. That might be the reason for the paint problems on the bumpers. Hopefully my car will get painted correctly and ill be able to enjoy it, if not im selling it and getting a Lexus IS-F.

PapoZalsa 07-31-2010 07:38 PM

All you guys need to let Nissan North America know (email) about all this issues!!!

In addition NNA has a page in Facebook, last tab is a Discussion Board for you to post all this stuff a get it up to the food chain.

wilsonp 07-31-2010 10:28 PM

One thing that disappoints me is modern cars orange peel paint jobs. The NSX has no orange peel.

guys when ur taking close up shots pls use Macro mode... every pic is blurred!

Bumped.

I live in Houston and I've owned this car for three weeks now and I began noticing reddish brown like spots ALL over the car, mostly on the metal sections though. Not to mention that my flip flop scratched the door entry sill area the other day.

I've emailed the dealer this evening and I'm waiting on a response.

I'm not going to blow up about it b/c that solves nothing, but a letter to them pointing out Nissan's sub-par manufacturing capabilities should get their attention.

Problems since delivery on 7.2.2011 -

1. Tire pressure sensor failed in 2 days.
2. Wheels (2) were scratched in lug well areas. (Due to installation)
3. Tint was peeling off (aftermarket)
4. Clearcoat / paint issues.

Paint issue is a warranty issue.
Wheels scratched is a dealer issue, they can and should have that fixd.
Aftermarket tint? You said the car was new, so did the dealer have the tint put on or you? Either way, either one should fix and make right.

Good luck...

reviving a old thread I was cleaning my fender of bird dropping and I notice 2 specs that wouldn't wash away. After I took a closer look it look like the bird dropping went make a chip in the paint and its looks like its starting to rust :( after looking over the car more carefully theres quite a few chips and it looks like made all the way through to bare metal. my car is pearl white and the chips are silver. What kind of cheap paint is nissan using.

I had the same thing yesterday. I have a red 09 and i was washing and waxing it yesterday on a nice sunny day and the car almost looked orange till i put my sunglasses on then it was red lol. It shouldnt be paint fade either since my car is always garaged and only sees the sun when out driving around.

edub370 10-07-2011 07:52 AM

go through your dealer before contacting NNA. Most people that have broached the issue have had good luck. I had two factory-funded repaints on my car.

sdfoster91 01-31-2012 08:00 PM

Just got word from the dealer that they will not cover my paint after they inspected it.

I have a black 2010 roadster z (10k miles) and this paint is worse than my car I traded for it (2007 black armada with 65k miles). My last 3 cars over the period of 9 years have been made by nissan and since Nissan wont cover their new crappy paint this z will be my last. Also I will make sure to tell everyone I know not to buy a Nissan because the paint will look like crap after 1 year of light use.

Even when I was at the St. Louis auto show last weekend it was evident that the new nissans had deeper swirl marks than the rest of the cars at the show.

Thechidz 02-06-2012 07:15 PM

Just noticed the problem on mine today. Its on the fron wheel well areas just like others posted. I know my dealer wont cover it they are known crooks. Anyone have luck through Nissan corporate?

Just do add to this, please see post #22

Good pics of the raised bumps in the clear.
