Lost key fob.

So my GF lost the key fob while at work. (trader joes)
She has no clue where she did lose it, either inside or outside
on the parking lot. She searched inside and outside but no
luck in finding it. She carried the fob in her pocket. :shakes head:
We still have the actual key it self in the key ring.

Has anyone lost the fob part only? Knowing that someone
may have it and can easily steal the car while at work.
For now to avoid this, shes not driving the 370z to work.

what actions did you guys take (if you lost it)
or recommend doing.

You can either replace the fob and not keep anything of value in the car if it does get stolen or go the most expensive way and have it re-keyed which include two new remotes with mechanical keys along with them changing the lock on the driver side door.

I'd take my chances with option 1 and simply avoid the location where they were lost for a while.

You may even check with some of the store employees there and see if anyone turned it in by chance worth a shot :ugh2:

Do not never, ever, ever let my gf borrow/drive my car
Things like these would never happen. One less issue to deal with :)

I don't believe you can start the car without the key part of the fob. It will allow you to open to doors but I'm pretty sure you need the entire assembly to start the engine.

When you have the new fob programmed (which you can pick up and have done at a dealer) it should kill the old fob.

Have to disagree on the key part.

The key is only to allow you to unlock and lock.

The fob is the brains and will start the vehicle without the key in it.

Try it? ;)

Yeah trips is right, fob only will start the car. The key is to lock the glove box or the doors incase the fob dies

Edit - plus if you lost ONLY the fob couldn't you just get your fobs reprogrammed? if you bought a new fob it'd have to be reprogrammed anyway... Don't need to change the actual key locks if he's still got both keys

lol, we both share our 2 cars and make monthly payments for them. I'd say i would consider her more of a wife than a gf since we have been together
for about 4 years and live together.

I'm gonna have it reprogrammed tomorrow, gonna make her go in to the dealership.

You could pick up a used fob on the forum and have that programmed too, would be cheaper than buying a new fob

coolvans1988 07-05-2013 06:32 PM

i'll considered that.

But to be on the safe side, i'll have the current fob i have reprogrammed..
The Tech is doing it for free.

If you get another fob, you'll have to have your spare and your new one programmed at the same time.
